British Science Week 2026

celebrate the wonders of science

How Schools Can Participate in British Science Week

6-15 March 2026

Every March, schools celebrate British Science Week, transforming classrooms into laboratories, research facilities or mini science centres. The event is an annual celebration that invites curiosity and inspires the next generation of scientists, engineers, and innovators.

Schools participate by hosting science activities for schools, such as experiments, talks, and field trips, often tied to an annual theme like sustainability or innovation. Investigating subjects like engineering, medicine, maths, computers and technology, students discover engaging hands-on activities, interactive demonstrations, and thought provoking experiments. Scientific principles spark curiosity and children become excited about learning.

The theme for British Science Week in 2026 is going to be, 'Curiosity...what's your question? The organisers would like you to get your children thinking about what they are most eager to discover about the world and how we would go about finding those answers.

At the very core of science and scientific enquiry is curiosity - it drives every discovery and breakthrough. Every experiment begins with someone asking a question, wanting to understand more. But curiosity is not limited to labs and research; it is a fundamental part of our daily lives.

This theme is a fantastic chance to celebrate inspiring individuals in STEM who followed their curiosity and made world-changing discoveries.

To help you find a day trip or workshop to tie-in with British Science Week in 2026, we have selected a range of options. We can help you find wildlife centres and zoos, or STEM workshops where your children can interact with robotics and engineering projects. Regional school visits include water treatment works, botanical gardens and field studies centres. If you want to link your science learning this term with the change and adapt theme, we can help. We even have a selection of overseas science trips if you are looking further afield!

Follow the links below to find out more about these workshops, or to discover dozens more that can help you meet your learning objectives in Science during British Science Week.

  • Host Science Workshops: These can be very interactive sessions such as coding challenges or chemistry experiments
  • Organise STEM School Trips: Perhaps visit a science museum, an observatory, or research center, to connect your classroom learning to the wider world
  • Invite Guest Speakers: Scientists or engineers can share insights with your students, inspiring them to find out more or get involved in STEM fields
  • Run School Challenges: This could be in the form of competitions like building a model rocket or solving an problem in an environmentally friendly way. Your challenge should encourage teamwork and creativity
  • Select age appropriate workshops or trips to ensure inclusivity
  • Make sure you align your activity with the yearly theme to make it more relevant
  • Use pre-event resources to build excitement and post event discussions to reinforce learning

Science week activities for schools, whether building electric circuits or exploring ecosystems, encourage children to think critically about their tasks. For older students, the themes can give them an insight into real world science applications, perhaps giving them ideas for future careers and professions.
