The Field Studies Council helps pupils turn curiosity into meaningful scientific questions through hands-on outdoor learning. Our activities encourage learners to ask “why?”, “how?” and “what if?” while investigating real habitats, species and environmental processes. From measuring biodiversity to exploring climate change, we support teachers to build enquiry skills, critical thinking and a lifelong curiosity about the natural world.

Wildlife School TripRhyd-y-Creuau has an abundance of wildlife, and we offer a range of sessions and courses all about our natural environmant and the wildife within it.
Students will look at a variety of plants and common animals using age appropriate classification keys to identify living things we find in our woodland and in our pond habitats. From mammals, invertebrates and bird life, to the native plants and flowers found in North Wales - we have an amazing array of wildlife to study!
Most sessions have introductory and concluding classroom sessions. They are delivered by fully trained and experienced tutors.
Bushcraft School TripIdentify basic survival needs, explore the woods, build a shelter and forage for wild foods. Follow a woodland trail and search for tracks and signs, and spend a day filled with team building and problem solving activities.
We offer a range of sessions and courses on bushcraft, which can include;
- Orienteering and Navigation
- Mammal tracks and signs
- Camp fire building and lighting
- Den building
- Foraging

Human Geography can be covered through fieldwork in a range of sessions and courses. Depending on the level and course you follow, this may include;

Physical Geography School Trip Click to read full text Geography courses cover KS2 to A level groups. KS2 pupils can use maps, stories and games to explore the woods. Discover the plants and animals that live here and design and build dens.
Our geography fieldwork trips and courses are carefully designed to cover all essential content from the curriculum. We ensure the maximum time outdoors possible, allowing students to take advantage of all benefits resulting from outdoor learning.
The geography fieldwork courses are tailored to curriculum requirements for GCSE, A Level, National, Higher, IB and lower secondary specifications and packed with relevant fieldwork content.

Coastal - Where the land meets the sea, the UK's coastline is over 7500 miles in length, and it's a place that's always changing through erosion, transportation and deposition. Coastlines are influenced by many physical and human forces, with dramatic consequences for the people who live there.
Rivers - constantly changing, water levels rise and fall after rain and with the seasons. Erosion, transportation and deposition can all alter the characteristics of the channel and the regime of the river
Regeneration - a complex process aiming to turn areas into sustainable, desirable and effective spaces for us to use and enjoy.
Investigations - at a local scale to consider place meaning and representation changing economic function and socio-demographic characteristics of places.
But we can also create a trip that is totally bespoke to your needs.

Primary courses see children using maps, stories and games to explore the area. For KS4 and A level students all of our courses are linked to the exam board requirements for each subject and the course can be tailored to your specific needs.
We offer a range of sessions and courses covering environmental geography through fieldwork. Most sessions have short classroom sessions before and after. Teaching is delivered by fully trained and experienced tutors.
Students can cover a range of environmental geography topics looking at different plants and animals.
Dependant on the course you choose, students could have the opportunity to;
- take first hand measurements, make observations of distinctive river land forms found at the fieldwork sites along the river.
- make a comparison of two different areas used to observe the contrasting abundance of plants associated with varying management regimes.
- Investigate how human activity affects biodiversity, local flows, cycles and processes.
- take primary measurements of the coastal landscape in order to interpret the impact of key coastal processes and management on the landscape.

Physical Education School Trip Click to read full text Rhyd-y-creuau can offer a range of adventurous activities including rock climbing, ghyll scrambling, and hiking.
Other activities may include orienteering, problem solving activities, bushcraft, canoeing, rafting, ghyll scrambling, hiking, ropes course, rock climbing, coasteering.
These activities offer the opportunity for fun and learning in an out-of-classroom setting, where pupils will develop their teamwork skills such as communication, problem solving, listening, collaboration and leadership. By challenging themselves to work together to achieve these activities, students develop self-awareness, confidence and self-esteem.
Learning in a natural environment permits students to develop an appreciation and respect for nature and living things, as well as an understanding of how we can look after our environment.
For our older students, this is an action packed course, set in stunning natural locations and inspiring students to succeed and excel in new physical challenges. It provides opportunities to improve confidence, build character and develop the desire to lead healthy, active lives while having fun participating in adventure activities.
A wide range of competitive, cooperative, fun and creative activities will stimulate students to think in different ways about themselves, each other and world in which we live in. They will have to work as a team, building trust and developing skills to solve problems through challenges such as low ropes, team building, orienteering and climbing. This course can be tailored specifically to any year group in key stage three and build in specific learning aims and needs for your group.
Pupils can do these activities in a residential course alongside curriculum content or environmental education.
Team Building School TripThese activities offer the opportunity for fun and learning in an out-of-classroom setting, where pupils will develop their teamwork skills such as communication, problem solving, listening, collaboration and leadership. By challenging themselves to work together to achieve these activities, students develop self-awareness, confidence and self-esteem.

Biology School Trip Click to read full text Field Studies Council can offer a range of curriculum-based biology courses from KS2 to A level trips. KS2 pupils can look at a range of habitats, learning about microhabitats and how they provide the basic needs for living things. Pupils can learn to identify the different structures of plants and name a variety of common animals. There will be mini beast hunt so pupils can observe them in their microhabitats.
The centre offers a range of sessions and courses covering practical biology through fieldwork. Most sessions have short classroom sessions before and after.
Secondary courses offer students the opportunity to undertake a range of ecological investigations in a variety of inspiring habitats and complete relevant required practicals. A wide range of mathematical skills are embedded into every course, including a variety of graphical forms, or calculations such as Simpson's index of diversity.
Students may carry out an investigation into the effect of organic pollution in a freshwater ecosystem or look at energy flow and the efficiency of energy transfer within an ecosystem.
Teaching is delivered by fully trained and experienced tutors.
Field Studies Council offers fieldwork and outdoor learning for groups of all ages at centres across the UK. Trips use our stunning locations to teach curriculum focused work and inspire everyone about the environment.
Our primary field trips enable you to pick and choose from a range of exciting adventure or curriculum sessions to build your own trip. Our visits will immerse primary school children in the natural world, taking in its sights, sounds and smells.
For secondary and A level groups we offer geography, biology and environmental science courses. We can tailor them to your own requirements to ensure you get the most from your visit and trips utilise our local environment to fully engage students.
