How can schools arrange music trips in the UK to explore performance, composition, and history?

Teaching music helps children develop confidence and self-expression, improving skills such as listening and concentration. Music is a statutory part of the national curriculum at KS1-3, however ukmusic.org, the industry's representative voice, point to significantly declining numbers in pupils taking GCSE and A-Level Music, and the grant funding removed resulting in several universities closing their music departments.

But you are teaching music to your class, which is fantastic.  So how do you choose a music trip that connects with your learning goals and meets the requirements of the curriculum?

Performance: Attending a concert, watch a rehearsal or take part in a singing, ensemble or instrumental workshop. Ask pupils to notice how performers communicate with one another and the audience.
Composition: Visit a recording studio or join a songwriting, beat-making or improvisation session. Pupils might create a short piece before the experience and develop it during the workshop.
Music history: Explore a museum, historic venue or musical landmark. Link the visit to a period, composer or tradition pupils are learning about.
Listening and appreciation: Compare live performances, instruments or musical styles, and discuss how venue, context and interpretation affect the experience.

Across the UK, cities such as London and Edinburgh offer a wide choice of concert venues, theatres, museums and music workshops. Tickets are often available for school groups at discounted rates.  A city visit could also combine a performance with a guided tour or time to explore the history of a venue.

For groups planning a music trip overseas, European cities such as Vienna, Rome or Paris can offer further opportunities to connect music with culture and history and there are a number of tour operators with experience of helping school groups arrange musical tours. 
Whatever type of music trip you opt for, prepare pupils beforehand by introducing the music, performers or historical context they will experience. You could give them a simple listening or observation task.  Then afterwards, help pupils reflect through discussion and reviews. They could compose a response to the performance or compare what they heard with a recording studied in class.
