All the workshops are aligned to the National curriculum, supporting schools in providing a broad and balanced curriculum to all pupils.
Through my workshops, I give children the opportunity to practise historical enquiries as well as develop character building skills through collaborative learning.
I offer great value for money and can deliver sessions to groups, whole classes or more than one class in one day. The programme can be jointly designed to suit the school’s needs.
I hold a fully enhanced DBS and public indemnity insurance.

Which Curriculum Subjects do you cater for?
Through out the day the children will take a look at life as a Victorian child. The workshop leader will be in dramatical character as a Victorian teacher and Chimney Sweep. There will be times for the children themselves to get involved using drama as a medium.
Curriculum topics available: Singing.
The Victorian children would always sing the national Anthem every day at school. Your children will also experience this, by learning the first verse of the National Anthem and singing it in class.
Curriculum topics available: Design, Painting.
During the workshop the children will design and paint their own Victorian penny (over sized) to be able to use later in the day to access the Victorian penny school class. The children are also shown what the writing and numbers around the 'old penny' mean.
Curriculum topics available: Work and the Factory system.
The whole day will involve discussion around how the Victorians impacted on society and how the they embraced and exploited the Industrial revolution. Where ever possible local legacies from the I R will be explored.
Curriculum topics available: Queen Victoria, Factories and The Workhouse, Childhood and Schools.
The day is divided into 3 sessions.
1. A talk about the Victorians, how they came to be, Queen Victoria herself, the Industrial revolution, money, farming, cities etc. The children design their own penny to be used later.
2. A Victorian classroom experience
3. Games lesson - Victorian style, also looking at the work that children did - coal mines, factories, Chimney sweeps, Workhouse children. And the games they played
What size groups do you cater for?
Ideally the workshop day can is designed to cater for one class up to 30 children. However if you have 2 or 3 classes then discussion can be had on how to create a day to cater for the larger groups. It may mean a rotation of activities. This can be discussed.
Do you cater for visitors with Special Educational Needs (SEN)?
Where ever possible I try to cater for all children no matter what their personal circumstances are. I trust the school to support me and supervise where they think supervision is required.
Anything else?
Although the workshop comes with a template, it is very flexible and can be adapted to fit in with the school and its needs and time restraints.
Ideally the workshop will require use of the main hall for some of the day. When the weather permits some activities can take place outside.
A session involving painting will take place during this workshop.
The children are encouraged to come dressed in costume for the day.
Further details of the workshop are available on request.
Who are Humphs Histories?
I believe that learning should be fun and strive to combine these two factors within the workshop session together with my two main passions, love of history and theatre. There is nothing more rewarding than the passing of knowledge on to young people who are really enjoying themselves and learning at the same time.
I always aim to deliver a high quality of education.
In addition to my History degree I have been involved in the amateur theatre world all of my life, both on and off stage. I currently direct local musical and pantomime societies and incorporate this skill within ‘Humph’s Histories’ by ensuring plenty of interaction with the young people.
