The Great Fire of London Workshop

The Drama Hut

School Workshop Online Workshop

trip icon During this workshop our professional actor will take on the role of Thomas Farriner, the King's baker, from Pudding Lane, who survived the fire to tell the story of what happened during those four fateful days. Discover with help from him and later Samuel Pepys, the most famous diarist of the time, what it was like to live in London before and after the fire. During this workshop the children will, create 10 second pictures from the period, act out a poem depicting the events of those four days during which the fire raged through London and with movement and song, become the fire itself and debate with Samuel Pepys how the fire changed London forever. We will also discuss how architecture would be improved for the future!

Where we travel to

We can visit your school in:

What activities are available during this school workshop?

We will create 10 second pictures from the period. Discuss quotes from Samuel Pepy's diary and unravel their true meanings. Act out a poem depicting the events of those three days during which the fire raged through London. And with movement and song, become the fire itself with dramatic effect and climax. We will also meet and debate with Samuel Pepys how the fire changed London forever and explore how architecture could be improved for the future.

Which curriculum topics do we cater for?

Tudors Workshop

The Great Fire of London

Discover with help from Samuel Pepys, the famous diarist of the time, what it was like to live in London during this time before and after the fire. During this workshop the children will, create 10 second pictures from the period and later debate with Samuel Pepys how the fire changed London forever.

Performing Arts Workshop

Our workshops include tailored, fully interactive, drama games, role play, teamwork exercises, songs, movement and more, led by a professional costumed actor.

Monarchs Workshop

We will look at the reigning monarch at the time of The Great Fire Of London- King Charles II.

What size groups do we cater for?

We can work with up to 30 children at any one time for a minimum of 60 minutes. We offer special day rates for multiple classes and can deliver two different topics to different year groups on the same day, helping to manage tight school budgets.
All we require on the day is the school hall or similar to work in and a member of staff to observe the session/s.

How does safeguarding work for online workshops?

Online sessions are jointly hosted by the teacher and our actor and may or may not be recorded, depending on the preference of the school. Ideally workshops take place in a school hall with a large screen, however, they can also work extremely well in a classroom, with desks pushed aside. Our Risk Assessment document is available upon request and is updated regularly to comply with all current advice and guidelines.

What technology/devices/type of internet connection do schools need for an online workshop?

Online workshops are delivered live by professional actors and typically last 60-75 minutes each. They are structured in the same way as an on-site visit and have the advantage of utilising the benefits of technology ' in particular, virtual backgrounds, enabling actors to transport children back in time, to any era or location. School will require a good internet connection and ideally a large screen to project our actor on to, so all the children have good visibility.

Access for visitors with disabilities

Yes - the very nature of our workshops being so visual and experiential, has led to extremely positive feedback from teachers.

Visitors with Special Educational Needs (SEN)

Yes - children with special educational needs really benefit and enjoy our workshops.
