World Book Day is an excellent way to promote literacy and given children an appreciation for the written word. By encouraging children to pick up a book and lose themselves in its pages, we are helping to develop critical thinking skills and expand vocabularies. World Book Day is a creative way to engage with a topic through fun and enjoyment - we wish we had come up with it!

World Book Day 2026: Changing Lives Through a Love of Reading

1 January 2026

On Thursday 5 March 2026, schools across the UK and Ireland will come together for the 29th annual World Book Day. More than just a day to dress up, 2026 is about the mission to offer every child a life-changing opportunity to have a book of their own and to discover the joy of reading for pleasure.

Why World Book Day 2026 is a Literacy Milestone:

The £1/€1.50 Book Tokens: The core of World Book Day remains the book token. In 2026, a new lineup of diverse, exciting, and accessible £1 books will be released, ensuring that every student-regardless of their background-can take a book home for free.

Reading for Pleasure Framework: Access updated 2026 resources designed to help schools implement the "Six Elements of Reading for Pleasure," focusing on student choice, social reading, and being read to by an adult.

Inclusive Celebrations: 2026 resources place a heavy emphasis on making the day inclusive for all, offering alternatives to traditional costumes such as "Vocabulary Parades," "pajama days," or decorating classroom doors as book covers.

Curriculum & Engagement Focus:

Primary (EYFS & KS1/2): Focus on oral storytelling, book swaps, and the popular "Share a Story" sessions that encourage family engagement with literacy.

Secondary (KS3/4): Use World Book Day to highlight the link between reading and mental wellbeing, as well as exploring career paths in the creative and publishing industries.

Whole-School Impact: Use the day to launch or revitalise your school library and reading areas for the 2026/27 academic year.

Quick Facts for 2026:

Official Date: 5 March 2026 (Mark your calendars!).

Theme: Look out for the 2026 theme announcement in late 2025 to start your classroom displays.

Resources: Free lesson plans, assembly scripts, and activity sheets for all ages.
