Creative Writing-Engage and Inspire' - Fairy tales Workshop

The Drama Hut

School Workshop Online Workshop

trip icon During this workshop, we meet enthusiastic amateur writer, 'Sally Spade', who is keen to help and inspire children to be creative and have confidence to use their imaginations to write their very own stories! But first, how do they work? What's involved? What is it that makes a great story? With the help of the well-known fairy tale 'Cinderella', Sally takes the children on a journey of discovery into the world of storytelling. With the use of improvisation, role play, sound and movement, the children will discuss what makes a good story, learn how a story can be structured, look at characterisation, create a soundscape and create and perform their own version of Cinderella!

What activities are available during this school workshop?

Which curriculum topics do we cater for?

English Workshop

Story writing Fairy tales Myths and Legends Creative writing World Book Day

During this workshop, we will discuss some of our favourite stories of all time and explore what we think makes a good story. We will learn tools to help us structure a story of our own, create characters, look at the morals of a story, whilst also creating soundscapes to accompany our story. The children will also have an opportunity to create and perform their own version of 'Cinderella'.

Performing Arts Workshop

Our workshops include tailored, fully interactive, drama games, role play, teamwork exercises, songs, movement and more, led by a professional costumed actor.

What size groups do we cater for?

We typically run 60-120 minute workshops with up to 30 children at any one time and can offer special day rates for multiple classes. We are also able to provide two different topics on the same day for different year groups.

How does safeguarding work for online workshops?

Online sessions are jointly hosted by the teacher and our actor and may or may not be recorded, depending on the preference of the school. Ideally workshops take place in a school hall with a large screen, however, they can also work extremely well in a classroom, with desks pushed aside. Our Risk Assessment document is available upon request and is updated regularly to comply with all current advice and guidelines.

What technology/devices/type of internet connection do schools need for an online workshop?

Online workshops are delivered live by professional actors and typically last 60-75 minutes each. They are structured in the same way as an on-site visit and have the advantage of utilising the benefits of technology ' in particular, virtual backgrounds, enabling actors to transport children back in time, to any era or location. School will require a good internet connection and ideally a large screen to project our actor on to, so all the children have good visibility.

Access for visitors with disabilities

Yes - the very nature of our workshops being so visual and experiential, has led to extremely positive feedback from teachers.

Visitors with Special Educational Needs (SEN)

Children with special educational needs really benefit and enjoy our workshops.

Testimonial:

"We have used The Drama Hut on several occasions to help enrich and inspire the children's experience of the curriculum. All facilitators have been well prepared and able to use their dramatic skills to deliver well-pitched and interesting workshops. Children are always excited after the session and are able to speak confidently about what they have learnt."

Marie Hedges, Orleans Primary School, Middlesex
