Geology School Trips

Rocks, fossils and geological processes

What geology trips in the UK explore rocks, fossils, and earth sciences?

Geology field trips examine quarries, cliffs, and minerals - supporting earth processes and history topics.

From the evolution of the theory of Plate Tectonics to the modern methods of quarrying - the world of geology incorporates a wide range of themes and topics.

To help your class answer questions such as, 'what is a mineral?' or 'how are roads made?', take a look at the trips and workshops below.

Learn about the rock cycle and concepts such as uplift, erosion, transportation and deposition, to learn how igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks are formed.

On a global scale, study the processes associated with earthquakes and volcanoes (more about these subjects can also be found on our Physical Geography page.

Take a look at the Earth's distant past by getting hands on with fossils, or fast forward to the modern day by looking at the soils beneath our feet. Whatever your school geology topic, we can help!

Find a school trip or workshop for the following Geology topics: Earthquakes and Volcanoes, Fossils, Geological Processes, Mining and Quarrying, Plate Tectonics, Rocks, Soils, and more.

Geology School Trips - Frequently Asked Questions

9 March 2026

Why go on geology trips?
Geology trips are amazing because they bring the Earth's story to life through rocks and fossils. Students get to see real-world examples of how the planet has changed over millions of years, making science much more engaging and hands-on. Geology is very accessible as a subject and a trip or workshop is a fantastic way to inspire curiosity about our planet’s history.

Should I choose a geology workshop or a field trip?
Workshops are great if you want structured learning about rocks and minerals, typically costing between £150 and £400. The educator can bring fossils and rocks into the classroom that you may not find on a field trip. Field trips, on the other hand, allow students to get out and collect samples, explore natural formations, and observe geological features firsthand. We often combine both to match the science units being studied.

Are there free options for geology trips?
Absolutely! Beaches are fantastic for finding fossils without any cost, especially if you go at the right time. Some quarries allow visits with a permit, which can be a budget-friendly way to access interesting rock formations and learn about local geology.

What are the top 10 geology school trips?
1. **Jurassic Coast** - Famous for its fossils, this UNESCO World Heritage site offers a window into prehistoric life.
2. **In-school geology workshops** - Perfect for hands-on learning without leaving school grounds.
3. **Natural History Museum** - Located in London, it offers a free collection of rocks, minerals, and fossils to explore.
4. **Eden Project** - An incredible indoor rainforest with a focus on geology, climate, and ecosystems.
5. **Scottish Highlands** - Known for ancient volcanoes and rugged landscapes, ideal for studying volcanic activity.
6. **Welsh quarries** - Great for exploring different rock types and quarrying history.
7. **Peak District** - Famous for its caves and underground geology, perfect for spelunking adventures.
8. **Giant’s Causeway** - The stunning basalt columns formed by volcanic activity are a must-see.
9. **Local cliffs** - Watching erosion in action helps students understand geological processes shaping landscapes.
10. **Museums** - Local and regional museums often have mineral collections and exhibits that make geology accessible and fun.

What about geology trips for students with SEND?
Museums are excellent because they often have tactile exhibits and accessible displays. Field trips can be adapted with flat paths and easy terrain, and we’ve previously used samples indoors to ensure safety and accessibility while still offering a hands-on experience.

What’s the budget for a geology trip?
Costs vary depending on the activity. Free visits to coasts or local sites plus transportation can be as low as £4-£12 per child. Entry to centres or museums usually costs between £6 and £15. Workshops tend to be between £150 and £400, and residential stays might be £140-£280 per child.
