Roman Workshop

The Drama Hut

School Workshop Online Workshop

trip icon Meet Queen Boudicca, the leader of the Celts, as she leads you in a bid to outwit the Roman Empire. Through role play and improvisation, this warrior will engage the children in a quest to discover the secrets of the Roman Army. During the session the children will explore the differences between the Roman and the Celtic way of life, whilst challenging you to become a part of the Roman Army and experience the importance the role of 'discipline', is played in the life of a soldier. We will also discuss religious beliefs of the time and experience the difference between a Roman and Celtic menu and choose their preferred dinner!

Where we travel to

We can visit your school in:

Which curriculum topics do we cater for?

green tick Romans

The Roman Army Boudicca Rebellion

Led by Queen Boudicca, the children will experience what it was like to be a Roman soldier, recreate both open and closed formations, as well as understand how the Gods, Goddesses and religion played such an important part during Roman times. For this particular workshop, we encourage children to make their own Roman shields prior to our visit.

green tick Significant Individuals from History

The children will meet and learn all about Queen Boudicca in this interactive fast -paced workshop.

green tick Celts

As the leader of the Iceni Tribe, Queen Boudicca will introduce the children to her way of life as a Celtic warrior, including the food they ate and beliefs they held!

green tick Performing Arts

Click to read full text Our workshops include tailored, fully interactive, drama games, role play, teamwork exercises, songs, movement and more, led by a professional costumed actor.

Within our Roman Workshop the children will play our fast paced 10 Second Picture game to create freeze frame pictures of the Roman Invasion. We explore what being a Roman soldier would have been like and Boudicca will even practically teach the class about Roman shield formations whilst getting the class into shape and teaching them commands in Latin.

There are also plenty of opportunities for the class to flex their acting skills as we learn about and become Roman Gods and Goddesses, whilst exploring their importance and relevance to the Romans.

What size groups do we cater for?

We typically run 60-120 minute workshops with up to 30 children at any one time and can offer special day rates for multiple classes. We are also able to provide two different topics on the same day for different year groups.

How does safeguarding work for online workshops?

Online sessions are jointly hosted by the teacher and our actor and may or may not be recorded, depending on the preference of the school. Ideally workshops take place in a school hall with a large screen, however, they can also work extremely well in a classroom, with desks pushed aside. Our Risk Assessment document is available upon request and is updated regularly to comply with all current advice and guidelines.

What technology/devices/type of internet connection do schools need for an online workshop?

Online workshops are delivered live by professional actors and typically last 60-75 minutes each. They are structured in the same way as an on-site visit and have the advantage of utilising the benefits of technology – in particular, virtual backgrounds, enabling actors to transport children back in time, to any era or location. School will require a good internet connection and ideally a large screen to project our actor on to, so all the children have good visibility.

Access for visitors with disabilities

Yes - the very nature of our workshops being so visual and experiential, has led to extremely positive feedback from teachers.

Visitors with Special Educational Needs (SEN)

Children with special educational needs really benefit and enjoy our workshops.

Testimonials:

"The actor was unbelievable! So knowledgeable and enthusiastic. For her to still be as enthusiastic for the afternoon session as she was for the morning ones was nothing short of miraculous, and the children benefited so much from this at the end of a really challenging term… We enjoyed the formations using our Roman shields."

Crosfields School – April 2021

"They all enjoyed various different elements of the workshop- I think that was what worked so well, they were active for the most part but equally there was something for everyone throughout the day. I'd say the freeze frame, Guess the God activity was great fun and they all enjoyed the Roman Army formation activity to. A great day, engaging for children and adults alike. The childen were active and engaged throughout. Top job, will definitely book again when I am onto the next topic I can match up."

Who are The Drama Hut?

At the Drama Hut, we believe that schools should have ready access to drama in order to support learning. In providing an on-site and online service to schools, we offer a cost- effective alternative to expensive school trips, helping to bring history workshops from the curriculum to life. Through drama, children are able to experience a subject, complementing and enhancing their learning in the classroom.

All our team are trained both in facilitation and performance. They have experience working with children of all ages and share a common passion for learning through drama. All facilitators are DBS checked and implement The Drama Hut CPP (Child Protection Policy).

Our Reviews from Schools..

★★★★★
The whole exerience of using Drama Hut, from beginning to end, was very professional. Emails were responded to promptly and gentle reminders sent (which is appreciated when school is so busy). Lillie did a fantastic job throughout her visit. Her engaging and friendly manner hooked the children from the outset and she managed to keep them (including some challenging children) engaged and focused throughout, particularly since it was an extremely hot day at the very end of term. The children were thrilled to be able to show off their knowledge and learning of the Romans and this session really allowed them to consolidate everything they already knew, alongside learning new and interesting aspects of Roman life. They have insisted on holding Roman drill and marching over the past two days, using the commands as taught by Lillie. They were full of praise for the session and it was a lovely way to end the term. Thanks to everyone in the office for helping to organise the visit but especial thanks to Lillie for all her hard and enthusiastic work.

Boudica! was great at enthusing the children and used a great range of drama and games to teach some key points about Roman history. A great day, thank you.

★★★★★
As always, the children loved the session and were engaged throughout. As the school's History coordinator, I firmly believe that drama is essential for children to gain a real understanding of the past. A Drama Hut session gives them the opportunity to do this in a fun and creative way.
