Planning the Perfect SEND School Trip

  • Pre-visit Planning: Choose venues that offer risk assessments, visual schedules, and familiarisation videos. And take a look at our health and safety checklist. Changing the school day routine or taking your children to new settings can be very difficult for children with autism. The more the venue can do to help you prepare your student for the trip and familiarise themselves with the experience, the better the outcomes.
  • Ask Questions: Contact the venue in advance to discuss specific needs, from medical to communication needs such as makaton and sensory. Also if your group needs any help with mobility issues then this would be a great time to discuss.
  • Transport Matters: To take you to and from your school trip venue, you will be using accessible transport providers who are experienced with school travel. For groups with mobililty disabilities, talk to the venue about how your group can get from where the transport parks to the venue itself.   • Prepare Students: Use social stories, visuals, and class discussions to reduce anxiety and build excitement. This will be a fantastic experience for students to learn outside the classroom and have a great learning experience.
