Planning SEND School Trips in the UK

Inclusive Adventures for Every Student

Planning a school trip that's both exciting and accessible for students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) can feel like navigating a maze blindfolded while riding a unicycle. Thankfully, the UK has lots of choices of destinations that cater to diverse needs, ensuring all of your students can enjoy a memorable, educational, and fun experiences. From sensory-rich museums to outdoor adventures designed with accessibility in mind, on our main SEND trips page we have rounded up the best SEND friendly school trips across the UK. The following article we will share some tips to make planning your SEND trip as smooth as a sunny day at the seaside.

Why SEND School Trips Matter

School trips aren't just about getting out of the classroom (though that is a big win for everyone). For students with SEND, these outings offer a chance to explore new environments, build social skills, and engage with learning in ways that textbooks just cannot match. Whether it is a tactile exhibit or a quiet nature trail, the right trip can spark curiosity and boost confidence. According to a 2023 study by the National Foundation for Educational Research, inclusive educational visits improve engagement and retention of knowledge for SEND students by up to 30%. So lets take a look at what you need to consider when making a school trip accessible.

Planning the Perfect SEND School Trip
  • Picking the right venue: Choose venues that can cater for the specific needs of your children. We can help with that - use the enquiry form on any of our pages and let us know what you need for your group - we can find you suitable venues!
  • Pre-visit Planning: Choose venues that offer risk assessments, visual schedules, and familiarisation videos. And take a look at our health and safety checklist. Changing the school day routine or taking your children to new settings can be very difficult for children with autism. The more the venue can do to help you prepare your student for the trip and familiarise themselves with the experience, the better the outcomes.
  • Ask Questions: Contact the venue in advance to discuss specific needs, from medical to communication needs such as makaton and sensory. Also if your group needs any help with mobility issues then this would be a great time to discuss.
  • Transport Matters: To take you to and from your school trip venue, you will be using accessible transport providers who are experienced with school travel. For groups with mobililty disabilities, talk to the venue about how your group can get from where the transport parks to the venue itself. There are some trusts that can help with transport support if needed, please see below.
  • Prepare Students: Use social stories, visuals, and class discussions to reduce anxiety and build excitement. This will be a fantastic experience for students to learn outside the classroom and have a great learning experience.

Here are a few examples, but visit our school trip funding page to view more details and eligibility criteria. Many venues also offer discounted or free admission for SEND students and their carers.
