Outdoor Education: Empowering Children with SEND

person icon Peak

At Peak, we’ve been helping young people with SEND thrive through outdoor education for over 20 years. Our specialised programme targets the emotional, social, and behavioral challenges they face daily. Driven by the ethos of ‘education through adventure,’ we take a person-centered approach to overcoming learning barriers"whether related to relationships, confidence, sensory needs, or behavior. Our holistic approach fosters re-engagement with education, empowering young people to reach their full potential.
Through our four centres, we deliver the Development Programme across a variety of dynamic activities, including watersports, archery, climbing, and mountain biking. These activities provide learners with engaging challenges that promote personal growth. We integrate educational qualifications and awards, such as AQA units and the Outdoor Learning GCSE, ensuring that students leave with valuable achievements they can carry beyond the classroom and into the real world.

Mobile Delivery Across the North

To make outdoor learning even more accessible, we also offer a mobile version of our Development Programme. Based in Sheffield, our mobile team delivers high-quality outdoor education to remote and underserved areas across the North of England. We work closely with schools and provisions to scout and assess local green spaces, adapting our activities to suit the environment and learners’ needs. This flexible approach allows students to experience the benefits of outdoor learning without the need for extensive travel"breaking down barriers to access and making the programme a viable option for a wider range of young people.

With a strong focus on outcomes, we prioritise the development of each individual’s social and emotional well-being, alongside their re-integration into education. Through our unique approach to learning, children with SEND have the opportunity to work alongside peers, build healthy relationships with instructors and teaching staff, and rediscover a love for learning.

Whether delivered at one of our four centres or via our mobile unit in the North, the Development Programme brings high-quality, tailored outdoor learning to the young people who need it most"wherever they are. Ranging from six weeks to a full school year, every programme is customised to meet the needs of each group. Progress is tracked through our unique participant tracker, offering real-time updates on the students' achievements, development, and engagement.
