"Stratford is actually where it all started for me - it's where I got my first real experience of doing Drama on an A-Level English trip about 30 years ago. It was an experience which changed my life and helped lead me to set up Theatre Workout in the first place - to give that same amazing experience to others.
"Stratford is a natural fit - it's a great place to visit for theatre, and is embedded in British culture, and I want Theatre Workout to be a part of that experience for students".
What sort of workshops will be available?
"It's really important to me that all our workshops are tailored to the group taking part - to their age and ability, and to the learning objectives their teacher sets for them. Most will likely be based on Shakespeare and acting techniques, but I expect some will explore aspects of devising, physical theatre, and stage combat. Where possible, we will link in with the play a group is going to see to maximise that experience, or we can link to a play they're studying at school to enhance their curriculum.
"We've done workshops in Stratford before, mostly on Stage Combat for the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, but sending practitioners from London to do them made them rather expensive. We've recently seen an increase in requests from schools and other clients, so we've recruited a small team of local practitioners - actors and directors - to do them now, and we've found studios in which to do them across the town, which means we can reduce the cost and make them much more affordable for schools."
What can actors do which teachers can't?
"Teachers do a great job, but giving students any opportunity to get out of the classroom and work with any sort of professional will inject a new energy to their studies. As actors, we definitely strike a different cord with students and give a fresh perspective. We can take them on a creative journey and help them discover new ways of working, staging scenes and exploring characters using techniques actors use in the rehearsal room and on stage night after night".
Why should a school do a workshop like this?
"Drama doesn't exist on the National Curriculum - it sits within English. The number of schools which teach Drama as a separate subject are sadly few and far between, and too many of them are one-person departments stretched thin. This means that subjects like Shakespeare are badly taught because the best way to learn about his plays is through performance. As a case in point, I don't remember what Shakespeare play I did for GCSE English, but I recall with acute detail working on A Midsummer Night's Dream for A-Level English because we stood it up, read it out loud, and played with it.
"I didn't do Drama at school, so when I got my first workshop experience it was fascinating. Shakespeare never wrote a word to be studied, he wrote plays to be performed. Our workshops give students to tools they need to understand the language, to spot how he directs the actor through the text, so they can bring it to life in the classroom."
