Theatre Workout
Adam has been working in theatre for almost 30 years. His first drama class was on an A-level English trip to Stratford aged 16 and it changed his life.
"I still remember that class - being terrified of performing but fascinated nonetheless", he said. "Had I not gone on that trip, I would never have volunteered to assist on a drama summer schoool the next year; to do a Theatre Degree the year after, and I doubt Theatre Workout would exist today. Every choice I have made since can be traced back to that 90 minute workshop with the RSC! So, really, its all their fault!"
Adam set up Theatre Workout in 2006 as a side-hustle when he wasn't acting, but it quickly took off and became his main focus. He has since developed the official education programmes for 38 major West End plays and musicals, most recently partnering with Tina - The Tina Turner Musical; and he and his team have created thousands of bespoke workshops covering all forms of theatre and performance.
When asked about Theatre Workout's recent Best Educational Provider award, Adam said "This is such an honour, and I'm delighted I get to showcase the value of the arts, of drama and theatre in particular, and the great benefits they offer to young people.
"Drama in the UK is on the decline - GCSE take up is down 37% since 2015. Most of the groups we work with don't do drama at school, so I know that we offer a unique opportunity to experience theatre first-hand, often for the first time. I hope this award will allow us to give even more young people this great opportunity".
Adam, like most of his team, knows what drama and theatre can do, because they've all experienced it for the first time, and dedicated their lives to it as a result.
Multiple studies show that creative learning doesn't detract from STEM subjects, but actually supports them. Creative thinking, problem solving, imagination, ingenuity, collaboration, solo practice, empathy, listening and communication skills - these are just some of the core skills drama gives us, life skills which enhance student's learning in other areas.
Theatre Workout gives students access to these skills through it's workshops in London's West End, in Stratford-Upon-Avon, and in schools across the UK.
