Dance through the decades workshops are a fun and dynamic way to learn the history and styles of dance from various time periods. Pupils will have the opportunity to learn choreography inspired by dances from the 1920s, 1950s, 1970s, and more. Each workshop will focus on a different decade, highlighting the popular music, fashion, and dance trends of that era.
we will explore how music and dance have evolved and intertwined through the decades. Music and dance have always been closely connected, with rhythms and melodies inspiring movement and expression in people of all ages.
We will start with the 1950s, the era of rock and roll. Students will learn about the influential artists of this decade, such as Elvis Presley and Chuck Berry, and how their music inspired energetic dances like the Twist and the Jive. We will listen to some classic rock and roll songs and learn some basic dance moves from this era.
Moving on to the 1960s, we will explore the music and dance trends of the swinging decade. Students will learn about iconic dances like the Mashed Potato, the Monkey, and the Swim, which were popular during this time. We will listen to and dance along to songs by artists such as The Beatles, The Supremes, and The Rolling Stones, and discuss how the music of this era reflected the social and cultural changes of the time.
In the 1970s, disco music took center stage, inspiring flashy dance moves and extravagant fashion. Students will learn about iconic disco artists like Donna Summer and The Bee Gees, and try out some moves from popular dances like the Hustle and the Electric Slide. We will listen to disco classics and discuss how the music of this era brought people together on the dance floor.
Moving into the 1980s, students will explore the influence of pop and electronic music on dance trends. From the catchy hooks of artists like Michael Jackson and Madonna to the synthesizer sounds of New Wave bands, the music of the 80s inspired a variety of dance styles, from breakdancing to the iconic dance moves of music videos. Students will try out some moves from this era and discuss how music videos became an important part of the music industry.
Finally, we will explore how music and dance have continued to evolve in the 90s, 2000s, and beyond. From the rise of hip hop and R&B in the 90s to the electronic dance music (EDM) of the 2000s and beyond, students will learn about how different genres have influenced dance trends and culture. We will listen to music from these decades and learn some moves from popular dances of the time.
By the end of this lesson, students will have a better understanding of how music and dance have evolved and influenced each other throughout the decades, and how they continue to be important forms of expression and connection in our modern world.
