Inventors Workshop with Ada Lovelace

The Drama Hut

School Workshop

trip icon Meet the eccentric and creative Ada Lovelace and learn about her passion for all things tech in our exciting Inventors Workshop! Explore what it meant for Lovelace to be a pioneering woman of STEM and how her 'poetical' approach to science has since inspired present-day young women interested in computer programming.

Learn about other important inventors from history, including Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell and Mavis Beaty, and how their creations have shaped the way we live today.

During the session the class will be challenged to come up with an idea for a new invention, something that will help their everyday lives through improvisation, role play and movement.

Where we travel to

We can visit your school in:

What activities are available during this school workshop?

During our Inventors Workshop we will play the exciting and fast paced 10 Second Picture game where the class will work in teams to create pictures of inventions. We will create a timeline of famous inventors and inventions, including Alexander Graham Bell, Thomas Edison and Timothy Berners Lee. We will become revolutionary inventors ourselves and consider what skills it takes to become an inventor, as well as acting out a poem about famous inventors from history.

Which curriculum topics do we cater for?

Victorian

Inventions

We explore what it meant for Ada Lovelace to be a pioneering woman of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics during the Victorian Times, a time when typically women were expected to marry and take part in their husband's interests and business, as well as bring up the children and take care of the home.

We also look at other inventions created during the Victorian era including the telephone and the lightbulb.

Significant Individuals from History

Led by Ada Lovelace, a pioneering woman of STEM back in the Victorian era, we will also explore many other significant individuals from history, remembered for creating innovative inventions which have shaped how we live and work today. Some of these individuals include Alexander Graham Bell, Thomas Edison, Mavis Beaty, Martin Baird and Timothy Berners Lee to name a few!

Computing

Coding Algorythms and data

Within this workshop we look at the 'Analytical Engine', a device remembered in history for being a very early machine likened to a computer that Ada Lovelace worked on with mathematician and friend, Charles Babbage.

Lovelace created an algorithm for the machine, which is why some people believe Lovelace to be the first computer programmer. Within the workshop the children will get the change to see what this machine looked like and as a class we will recreate the shape of it, through drama and role-play!

What size groups do we cater for?

We typically run 60-120 minute workshops with up to 30 children at any one time and can offer special day rates for multiple classes. We are also able to provide two different topics on the same day for different year groups.

Access for visitors with disabilities

Yes - the very nature of our workshops being so visual and experiential, has led to extremely positive feedback from teachers.

Visitors with Special Educational Needs (SEN)

Children with special educational needs really benefit and enjoy our workshops.
