Green Up Your Act Education Workshop

Our Green Shoots workshops focus on learning about the range of places that our food comes from, spanning farms, gardens, allotments and even our own windowsills! As a class we discover how far food travels by tracing the journeys of different varieties of fruit and vegetables. We discuss how food is grown, the benefits of fresh food and the responsibility we all share to reduce the huge amount of packaging and food thrown away every day.This workshop includes making paper pots planted with vegetable seedlings or growing microgreens. Pupils will also be shown how to make an up-cycled watering can. These hands-on activities demonstrate how easy and fun it can be to grow seasonal food and thereby reduce food miles and packaging. The seedlings can be taken home or grown at school enabling pupils to observe how the plants change and develop over time.

Our workshops support Biology topics by offering pupils the opportunity to engage with the diversity of living organisms and their local and wider environment. Our Living Things and Habitat Hero's workshops help explore the living world and look at improving habitats for wildlife to thrive and survive.

After exploring issues around local and global biodiversity using interactive presentations and discussing some of the problems wildlife experience and looking at how habitats for insects and wildlife can be improved. We put these ideas into practice by making beautiful art to raise awareness of these issues, by carrying out new planting to improve school grounds or by building bug hotels to create suitable habitats for biodiversity.

Our workshops explore the physical environment, its effect on humans and the practical initiatives taking place to address the environmental challenges facing the world. Interactive presentations explore topics including plastics in the oceans, rainforest deforestation, global warming and renewable energy. After discussing some of these big issues and innovations to mitigate them we explore a range of up-cycled objects and finish by making a visually unique eco item to take home and enjoy.

Our workshops explore how humans impact the physical environment in many ways: overpopulation, pollution, burning fossil fuels, plastic in the ocean and deforestation. Changes like these have triggered climate change, soil erosion, poor air quality, and undrinkable water. Sessions include inspiring presentations to bring these topics to life and discussions around some of these big issues and innovations to mitigate them. In each workshop we also explore a range of up-cycled objects and finish by making a visually unique eco item to take home and enjoy.

We use art and craft as a medium to bring environmental issues into focus for young people. In each session pupils first explore a topical environmental issue and are then invited to make a colourful recycled craft item. These connect creative thinking and environmental issues and highlight how we can all play a part in supporting a beautiful and healthy natural environment.The craft works can be taken home or displayed in school.

After sixteen years experience in providing environmental education, teachers and their pupils are intrigued about what we have done to reach this point. A combination of education, volunteering and determination, have all played their part in making Green Up Your Act what it is today. We are delighted to share inspiring stories with you and your pupils and answer any questions on the winding path to forging their own careers.

Our Citizenship workshops support students to explore and debate critical environmental issues and develop their ability to think creatively about the world around them.

The sessions embed thinking about our role and personal commitment to the long-term wellbeing of the environment, the community and build self-confidence. With the aid of interactive presentations, we visit specific environmental issues. Design & Technology is explored in our workshops through investigations into how we design things, how we make things, the materials we use, how much material we use and how we dispose of our waste. With the aid of an interactive presentation, we visit the award-winning 'Earthship' building solution for housing to combat climate change. Built from recycled materials and is designed to be powered by renewable energy, its design and function makes it very sustainable and eco-friendly, allowing us to reduce our environmental impact. After discussing the design and function of the 'Earthship', we explore a range of up-cycled objects and finish by making a visually unique eco item to take home and enjoy.

In our workshops we open up a dialogue with pupils to raise awareness on green issues coming up every day at home, in their school and out in the wider world. Our sessions help students explore climate change as a global issue and discuss the actions that we can take to make positive changes.

During our workshops students learn how to make informed decisions to enable them to take micro actions and make the right choices to live sustainably, buy better, consume less, create real environmental change. We will also explore and discuss a variety of colourful up'cycled objects made from different materials from around the world and finish by growing seasonal food or making a visually unique eco item to take home and enjoy.

Pupils will learn about sustainability in more depth so they can contribute to environmental stewardship. The workshops will contribute to emotional literacy by supporting students in voicing their fears and anxieties and starting to harness the resources they need to sustain personal wellbeing.

As the human population increases, so does the pressure on ecosystems, since we draw ever more resources from them. Biodiversity is essential for sustainable development and human wellbeing and provides resilience to climate change. Our workshop activities including building bug hotels, sowing wildflowers and learning about how to improve habitats in the school grounds, parks and gardens enables your pupils to feel empowered to make a meaningful difference with every season.
