Which curriculum topics do we cater for?
Cooking and Nutrition Workshop
Nutrition and healthy dietsPreparing food and cooking techniquesFood SafetySeasonal Food
The School Food Showdown is designed to make Healthy Eating and Nutrition come alive through an immersive, high-energy cookery workshop. By focusing on the NHS Eatwell Guide, the program teaches students how to balance a diet using fresh Ingredients, such as vegetables and meat, to create well-rounded recipes.
Beyond just eating, the "battle" format provides a practical education in kitchen essentials, such as Cooking techniques, while demonstrating how to prepare meals on a budgeting mindset. By emphasising local and seasonal produce, the showdown bridges the gap between the shop or market and the plate, giving pupils the confidence to make nutritional choices for a Healthy lifestyle.
PSHE Workshop
Healthy LivingHealthy eating
The School Food Showdown serves as a dynamic vehicle for PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic) education by fostering confidence and wellbeing through hands-on participation. The workshop heavily encourages teamwork and co-operation, requiring students to practice effective communication and critical thinking under pressure.
Beyond the kitchen, the workshop promotes a positive lifestyle by addressing mental health through the link with balanced Healthy Eating. It also touches on safety and safe food handling practices, while helping students to make informed, independent choices. The School Food Showdown empowers pupils to take responsibility for their own healthy habits and long-term personal growth.
What size groups do we cater for?
We can have between 30 and 200 pupils per workshop, but we recommend around 100 for the best experience!
Access for visitors with disabilities
We always involve pupils with disabilities with all aspects of the workshop, and we encourage teachers to actively help them be involved.
Visitors with Special Educational Needs (SEN)
To make the School Food Showdown truly impactful in a SEND setting, the focus shifts from a high-octane competition to a more predictable dialled back, sensory-aware experience that prioritises comfort over the clock. Flexibility is key: Noise levels are kept in check by swapping loud cheers for silent applause, lowering the music to a less pressurised level. By offering low-pressure ways to participate and adapting for those who prefer to watch from the sidelines, the show becomes a predictable, safe environment. Ultimately, success isn't defined by a finished dish on a timer, but by creating a flexible space where students can engage with healthy food at a pace that respects their individual social and sensory needs.
