AI and Machine Learning Workshop

Hyett Education

School Workshop

trip icon This workshop introduces students to Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning, focusing on their applications in self-driving vehicles. Students learn physical computing and coding concepts with BBC micro:bit computers, to build and program a robot buggy with AI capabilities.

The workshop covers traditional coding and contrasts it with machine learning, where computers learn from data rather than explicit instructions. Neural networks, inspired by the structure of the human brain, are introduced as a key concept underpinning how machines learn. Students engage in activities related to reinforcement learning, pattern recognition, and image recognition, including using an AI-powered camera to program their buggy to recognise traffic signals.

The workshop also touches on the ethical implications of AI, and helps students consider safety and privacy within their use of this developing technology.

All our workshops are run by experienced instructors, and we can tailor sessions to include all children, including those with SEN, so that the children can access all activities. When you make any additional needs of your group known, our team can explain how they can encourage, support, and motivate each and every child.

Workshop Aims:

Highlight the importance of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education, emphasising "artificial intelligence engineer" as a potential STEM career path.

Introduce fundamental concepts of Artificial Intelligence and machine learning, and iIllustrate practical applications of machine learning.

Demonstrate the difference between traditional coding which uses selection, repetition, and event-driven logic, and contrast this to machine learning.

Explore through practical experiments, a variety of machine learning techniques, including reinforcement learning, pattern recognition, and image recognition.

Comprehend the principles of neural networks as the basis for machine learning, and explore this through a practical exercise.

Understand some of the basic techniques used by self-driving vehicles.

Consider the ethical implications of AI - safety, privacy, job retention, accountability, energy use, etc.

Build and code a self-guided robot that uses image recognition to determine its actions.

Curriculum Objectives:

Computing KS2

Design, write and debug programs that accomplish specific goals, including controlling or simulating physical systems

Use sequence, selection, and repetition in programs; work with variables and various forms of input and output

Computing KS3

Design, use and evaluate computational abstractions that model the state and behaviour of real-world problems

Understand a range of ways to use technology safely, respectfully, responsibly and securely, including protecting their online identity and privacy

Design and Technology KS3

Investigate new and emerging technologies

Apply computing and use electronics to embed intelligence in products that respond to inputs [for example, sensors], and control outputs [for example, actuators], using programmable components [for example, microcontrollers].

"The overall experience was very enjoyable and the activity making the plane fly was challenging but fun. I really enjoyed learning about AI and how it will be used for future inventions.

I liked how you could interact with quite complicated tech and the person taught us how to use it properly and safely. It was also quite interesting and the videos of the robots were really cool."
