Discover the Jurassic Coast for Primary and Middle Schools - Curriculum Travel School Trip

South West Dorset

trip icon The Jurassic Coast is the perfect place to take part in some Fossil Hunting on some of the most beautiful beaches and coastline. Charmouth and Chesil Beaches are the safest for school groups with the winter months being better time to hunt as the beaches are quieter and the sea and weather has caused more erosion.

If you cannot visit these beaches then there are plenty of other places and museums to visit along the coastline to discover fossils.

Include in your trip a visit to the Etches Collection Museum of Jurassic Marine Life or the Sea Life Centre in Weymouth. Alternatively you could visit the Abbotsbury Swannery or Portland Bill Lighthouse.

These visits can also be extended into an overnight stay in the area

green tick Geology School Trip

Rocks Fossils Earthquakes and Volcanoes Soils Plate Tectonics Geological Processes Mining and Quarrying

Click to read full text Geology plays a pivotal role in shaping the landscape, wildlife, and intrinsic character of Dorset, imparting a unique and varied tapestry to the region. The county's diverse topography and ecological makeup are largely the result of an array of geological formations, from the fertile clay vales and striking limestone scarps to the expansive chalk downs and sandy heaths.
This geological diversity extends to ancient landslides and erosion surfaces, illustrating a rich history of natural processes at work. These varied rock types, coupled with the forces of erosion and other geological processes, have crafted a distinctive and varied countryside that stands as a testament to the dynamic earth processes.
This rich geological foundation not only influences the scenic beauty of Dorset but also contributes to the biodiversity and cultural identity of the area, making it a vivid example of how geology can mold the character of a region.
