The establishment of the city dates back to approximately AD 71, marked by the strategic deployment of 5,000 soldiers from the Ninth Legion, who advanced from Lincoln to establish a fortified encampment. This significant military endeavor led to the construction of a substantial fortress at the confluence of the rivers Ouse and Foss, giving rise to the birth of Eboracum, the Roman designation for York. Today, York presents an array of outstanding opportunities for the re-enactment and exploration of its rich Roman heritage.
Curriculum topics available: Invaders and Settlers, Viking Raids and Invasion, Viking Trade, Mythology and Culture.
It is arguable that York stands as the premier destination in England for delving into Viking heritage. This historic city not only boasts an abundance of Viking-era history but also frequently hosts battle re-enactments, enriching the experience. A visit to the renowned Jorvik Museum and Visitor Centre, accompanied by a knowledgeable Viking guide, is an essential highlight for those interested in exploring this fascinating aspect of York's past.
