Why
book 'Maya Workshops' with The Drama Hut
During this Drama Hut workshop we meet 'Sally Spade', a history and archeologist enthusiast, who has been asked to write an article about The Maya Civilisation! Through drama games, improvisation and role play we will depict the life and famous structures during the Mayan period and re-create the story of “The Hero Twins” from the Popol Vuh. We will also explore Maya religion and the specific roles the Gods, Kings and Priests played during this period by playing ‘Guess the God’ and prepare, with music and dance, a ritual ceremony of a willing victim for human sacrifice!
What activities are available during this educational workshop?
We will play our fast-paced 10 second picture game, depicting life and famous structures during this period. Re-create the story of “The Hero Twins” from the Popol Vuh and also
explore Maya religion and the specific roles the Gods, Kings and Priests played during this period by playing ‘Guess the God’.
Lead by 'Sally Spade' with music and dance, we will also prepare a ritual ceremony of a willing victim for human sacrifice!

What size groups do you cater for?
We typically run 60-120 minute workshops with up to 30 children at any one time and can offer special day rates for multiple classes. We are also able to provide two different topics on the same day for different year groups.
How does safeguarding work for online workshops?
Online sessions are jointly hosted by the teacher and our actor and may or may not be recorded, depending on the preference of the school. Ideally workshops take place in a school hall with a large screen, however, they can also work extremely well in a classroom, with desks pushed aside. Our Risk Assessment document is available upon request and is updated regularly to comply with all current advice and guidelines.
What technology/devices/type of internet connection do schools need for an online workshop?
Online workshops are delivered live by professional actors and typically last 60-75 minutes each. They are structured in the same way as an on-site visit and have the advantage of utilising the benefits of technology – in particular, virtual backgrounds, enabling actors to transport children back in time, to any era or location. School will require a good internet connection and ideally a large screen to project our actor on to, so all the children have good visibility.
Do you offer access for visitors with disabilities?
Yes - the very nature of our workshops being so visual and experiential, has led to extremely positive feedback from teachers.
Do you cater for visitors with Special Educational Needs (SEN)?
Yes - children with special educational needs really benefit and enjoy our workshops.

"Sometimes online sessions fail to engage and 'hit the mark' this workshop was the complete opposite. It was like 'Sally Spade' was in the classroom with us!
So much learning took place in a fun and interesting way.
The children have been talking about the story of the twins lots after the session.
There was the right amount of sitting listening and moving and engaging.
A very well delivered session that aided our learning in school."
