Cybersecurity & Cryptography Workshop - Y5-Y9

Hyett Education

School Workshop

trip icon Cryptography is a critical discipline in securing online communications, and is at the core of modern cybersecurity practices. This workshop is the first step in developing an understanding of this exciting application of computer science.

In our Cryptography workshop, students:

- Learn about the historical and contemporary importance of cryptography in securing communications, including online communications.

- Explore Caesar Shifts and other simple cryptography techniques, and practise encrypting and decrypting messages on paper.

- Use a bespoke Hyett Education program to encrypt and decrypt messages and simple pixel art images.

- Understand why computers are so efficient in encrypting and decrypting information, and the potential risks of this.

- Discuss the implications for selecting appropriate passwords for their own use online

Curriculum Objectives:

Key Stage 2 Computing National Curriculum:

- understand computer networks including the internet; how they can provide multiple services, such as the world wide web; and the opportunities they offer for communication and collaboration

- select, use and combine a variety of software (including internet services) on a range of digital devices to design and create a range of programs, systems and content that accomplish given goals, including collecting, analysing, evaluating and presenting data and information

- use technology safely, respectfully and responsibly; recognise acceptable/unacceptable behaviour; identify a range of ways to report concerns about content and contact.

Key Stage 3 Computing National Curriculum:

- undertake creative projects that involve selecting, using, and combining multiple applications, preferably across a range of devices, to achieve challenging goals, including collecting and analysing data and meeting the needs of known users.

- understand a range of ways to use technology safely, respectfully, responsibly and securely, including protecting their online identity and privacy; recognise inappropriate content, contact and conduct and know how to report concerns.

Where we travel to

We can visit your school in: All UK Regions

What activities are available during this school workshop?

Students use what they have learned about cryptography to compete as a team in a code-breaking challenge within one of a number of bespoke scenarios:

Astronaut Emergency: taking on the role of astronauts, can students break the security codes to unlock the emergency escape module?

Spitfire Medal Predicament: taking on the role of a World War II  historian, can students help the great-granddaughter of a Spitfire pilot unlock the safe that contains his medals?

Unmask The Hackers: taking on the role of a cybercrime police officer, can students unlock the secrets of a criminal hacking gang?

Students have to analyse documents, letters, photos and plans to try and work out what the decryption keys might be, and then test their ideas to open the locked safe that taunts them on their desk!

Which curriculum topics do we cater for?

green tick Maths

Logic and Problem Solving

These workshops have been delivered in a range of alternative provisions to children who have a wide range of needs. We can cater for a range of abilities and make the session fun and accessible.

We ask that teachers inform us before the session if there are any particular needs as we can ensure we make preparations to cater for those individual students.

green tick Engineering

Engineering isn't taught explicitly as a subject in KS2 & KS3 but the skills developed through the Technical Knowledge objectives in the Design Technology curriculum provide students with the foundations required to study engineering.

We allow students opportunities to build, test and tweak their designs to improve their robot's functionality.

What size groups do we cater for?

Standard Format:

2 to 3 sessions per day (approx 1.5 - 2.5 hours each)

Up to 34 children working in pairs

Access for visitors with disabilities

Yes. We aim to make all sessions accessible.

Visitors with Special Educational Needs (SEN)

All of our workshops are run by experienced instructors, and we can tailor sessions to include all children, including those with SEN, so that the children can access all activities. When you make any additional needs of your group known, our team can explain how they can encourage, support, and motivate each and every child.
