As human beings, food is a huge part of our lives. This workshop discusses Curriculum topics of PSHE such as Healthy Eating and Healthy Living, and the benefits of learning how to grow your own food.
As a class we discover how far food travels by tracing the journeys of different varieties of fruit and vegetables. We discuss how food is grown, the benefits of fresh food and the responsibility we all share to reduce the huge amount of packaging and food thrown away every day.
This workshop is completed by making paper pots planted with vegetable seedlings or growing micro greens. Pupils will also be shown how to make a recycled watering can. The seedlings can be taken home or grown at school enabling pupils to observe how the plants change and develop over time. This hands on activity demonstrates how easy and fun it can be to grow seasonal food and thereby reduce food miles and packaging. The session emphasises the value of healthy eating for us all.

During the workshops we used the subject of Environmental Geography to provide essential insights into the natural conditions and processes that affect food production. This knowledge helps you make informed decisions about what, where, and how to grow your own food in a way that is sustainable, efficient, and beneficial to both you and the environment.
After eighteen years experience of providing environmental education, teachers and their pupils are often intrigued about how we have reached this point. A combination of education, volunteering and determination have all played their part in making Green Up Your Act what it is today. We would be delighted to share inspiring stories with you and your pupils and answer any questions from our own career journey, highlighting the way that identifying the things that inspire you helps to focus where you gain experience and hone your talents. This session is designed to support pupils in their thinking as they embark on the path to forging their own careers. When booking the talk teachers are also invited to choose a creative craft outcome to enhance the session.
Sixth Form Enrichment Coordinator:
“The workshop on sustainability related careers was superb! Philip was an engaging presenter who ran through his own fascinating journey in finding his way to starting Green Up your Act. The workshop was full of little gems of advice for the students to take away with them. They all thoroughly enjoyed the workshop, as did I. Thank you so much for your time, we will be booking you again”!
Our workshops adapt perfectly for SEN school environments. We provide sessions at a pace best suited for the pupils needs and abilities. The use of colourful visuals, upbeat video clips and recycled / up-cycled materials are made available for pupils to handle, the eco designed items add rich sensory experience the session.
Over the last eighteen years, we have worked with hundreds of different schools and colleges across the UK. We are passionate about all things sustainable: recycling, up-cycling, global/local biodiversity, endangered species & their habitats, and the growing of seasonal food.
