FabDrumming
School Workshop South West Somerset
Children love drumming on things, rhythm and movement. No experience is required to join in with the fun. Body Percussion and Junk Percussion activities are a great way to bring a class together and get creative. They increase fine motor and gross motor coordination. They also build social skills as they work together to create music. Body Percussion and Junk Percussion workshops give children the freedom to express themselves and will give them a great sense of achievement.

A Junk Percussion Workshop makes the children look at the objects around them with fresh eyes and they will find out that rhythm is everywhere! They learn to play different interlocking rhythms and learn about pulse, beat, tempo and timbre. A session will help developing their skills of rhythm, concentration and improvisation.
Junk percussion isn't something new. People used to made drums and instruments from objects they found around them like shells, bones, wood, stones etc.
The world we live in is full of rubbish and we if we want to take care of the environment, we need to thow away so much less. That's why the three R's are so important.
A Junk Percussion workshop is a great and fun way to illustrate this, it encourages the children to question whether an item is 'rubbish' or 'reusable'.
A Junk Percussion or Body Percussion workshop is a great team building activity. Without working together, listing to and respecting each other, it won't sound good! A Junk Percussion or Body Percussion workshop is a fun ice-breaker and teambuilding exercise during an INSET day. It can also be a source of inspiration for the teachers, how to teach rhythm without having to buy expensive equipment or use it for lessons about sustainability.
Body percussion is a fusion of movement and sound. The children create rhythms and beats by rhythmic stomping their feet, clapping their hands, snapping their fingers and slapping their body. Body Percussion improves hand-eye and foot-eye coordination, concentration, body awareness, balance and rhythm skills. The children learn sequences of, rhytm, movement and footwork. They are dancing to music, but the music is made by themselves.
Yes, the workshops are suitable for all ages and abilities. Most children love banging a drum, making noise and exploring sounds. A Junk Percussion workshop gives them an opportunity for self-expression, because its all about what they can do instead of what they cant do. Ill adapt the workshop based on the needs and abilities of the pupils. It can be music exploration, stories, rhythm, drumming games etc.
