Volcanoes Workshop

Immersive Experiences

School Workshop

trip icon Supervolcanoes

74,000 years ago, on the island of Sumatra, the eruption of the volcano Toba was the largest volcanic eruption our planet had experienced in 25 million years.

Yet there have been far greater. 250 million years ago, an eruption in what is now Siberia lasted a million years and was likely responsible for the greatest mass extinction in Earth’s history.

This immersive film also explores giant volcanic eruptions elsewhere in our Solar System; flying audiences to Neptune’s frigid moon Triton, as well as the ultimate volcanic world: Jupiter’s moon Io.

Back on Earth, the legendary North American hotspot Yellowstone National Park raises the question: could a supervolcano erupt in our time?

Today we see disturbing indications that our planet is warming up: increased global temperatures, variations in the frequency and intensity of rain cycles, extreme meteorological events, retreating glacial ice and advancing desertification.

Yet the Earth has experienced long-term, natural climate change before. Is what we are experiencing today unavoidable or is it the result of human activity?
