Become part of a rural Ghanaian community and help support collaborative community development projects. Your days will be filled with both project work and cultural exploration, as you support the education of local children through informal teaching and some hands-on renovation work at a local school. Working alongside local educators and community leaders, you'll learn valuable skills in teaching techniques, public speaking, and community engagement. You'll also get your hands dirty on practical projects - such as improving classroom facilities or installing water-saving taps - that help improve access to important amenities for local people.
You'll also be introduced to Ghana's rich culture, history, and traditions. Cultural discovery is a major part of this journey, with visits to historical sites like Cape Coast Castle and Kakum National Park, as well as opportunities to connect with the locals through traditional dance, music, and cuisine. You'll spend time with the local community, where you'll not only be welcomed into their homes but also into their way of life, learning firsthand about Ghanaian customs and values.
This trip is designed to stretch your personal boundaries, helping you develop leadership, teamwork, and critical thinking skills. Whether you're teaching a class of students, collaborating with fellow volunteers, or learning a few words in Twi, you'll find yourself growing in confidence and independence. By the end of the trip, you'll walk away with lifelong memories, new skills, and a deeper understanding of the world.
Ghana offers an ideal setting for students seeking to make a meaningful impact while gaining a deeper understanding of African culture and development. The combination of hands-on educational work, community engagement, and exposure to Ghana's rich history provides an unforgettable experience. From teaching and renovating schools to supporting sustainable initiatives like water-saving taps, students contribute directly to local development and see the positive effects of their work.
In addition to the impactful community projects, Ghana's warm and welcoming people ensure that you'll feel connected to the culture and the locals. The opportunity to live within a local community provides a unique experience for students to become completely immersed in the local way of life, broadening their global perspectives and fostering genuine connections across cultures.

Example Itineraries for our 2026 trips
Days 1 - 2
Land in the capital city of Accra where our staff will be waiting for you. Depending on when you arrive, they will take you to a host family for the night or escort you straight to the Akuapem Hills.
On your second day, you will get a detailed induction session before a guided tour of your new surroundings and the chance to meet your host family.
Day 3
Get an introduction to the children and staff of the school you'll be working at, orientating yourself to your temporary workplace. Start informal lessons with the students, learning the teaching and planning skills you need from local staff.
In the afternoon, get your hands dirty as you get stuck into renovating the learning environments of the children to stimulate their learning. In the evening, enjoy a Twi language lesson to further immerse yourself in the local culture.
Days 4 - 6
Continue with your renovation and informal teaching activities, learning from the local experts and improving the work you do. Install water saving taps to help children wash their hands and improve basic hygiene.
In the evenings, join group feedback sessions to discuss your experiences, take a Ghana knowledge quiz, visit the Chief's Palace to learn about tribal traditions, and play games as a group.
Days 7 - 8
Enjoy a fascinating weekend excursion, starting with a trip to Cape Coast Castle. You'll learn about early Portuguese colonists and the history of the slave trade, followed by a picnic on the beach and cultural shows.
The next day, visit Kakum National Park and explore the tropical forest on a canopy walkway with the chance to see monkeys, antelope, alligators, and more!
Days 9 - 13
Head back to your school, continuing your project work to support local education efforts. Start with more infrastructure work, which could include painting, plastering, priming, gardening, or learning woodworking skills.
Pick up your teaching activities and play educational games with the students to help teach core English and maths principles. Try your hand at being creative and engaging with your lessons, and feel the energy when you have a class completely engaged with what you're teaching.
Outside of your work, play sports with the locals, enjoy a movie night with your friends, engage in traditional drum and dance lessons, and compete at another quiz night.
On your final full day, be sure to say goodbye to everyone you've met at the school and enjoy a fantastic farewell dinner at a local restaurant as a group.
Day 14
Head back to Accra and reflect on the once-in-a-lifetime journey you've undertaken, the memories you've made, and the skills you've developed. Look back on the incredible work you've done in the local community with pride.
Think about your newfound confidence, skills, and cultural understanding during your journey - these will stay with you for the rest of your life.

Who are Projects Abroad?
Since 1992, Projects Abroad has helped young people step beyond the familiar and discover what they're truly capable of. As a global leader in educational travel, we've partnered with over 500 schools to deliver transformative school trips that help shape students' passions, careers, and futures.
We realise that each school has its own goals and interests, and the students have their own interests. We work with every school to develop a tailored itinerary that reflects their values and allows the students to make a connection with the community in which they serve.
We're proud of our dedicated in-country staff whose diverse skill sets, local knowledge and love of their community allow us to develop relevant, immersive and worthwhile schedules for school trips. These experiences give the students responsibility and teach them to see the world through a different lens.
The result is a trip that students remember long after they've left school, and one that reflects well on the school that made it possible!
