Example Itineraries
Day 1
On arrival day, a Projects Abroad staff member will be waiting to collect your group from Accra Airport (ACC).
Walking through the airport, you will see a Projects Abroad staff member waiting for you. They are easy to spot because they’re by the airport exit holding a sign.
You will then be taken by minibus to your accommodation in Akuapem Hills, where you will have time to unpack and rest for a short while.
After you have settled in, you are given culture awareness training. This gives all volunteers an insight into the Ghanaian culture customs, and traditions.
There will also be orientations to help you feel more at ease during your time in Ghana. You’ll be shown the local area and then taken to your placement to get to know the facilities, meet placement staff, and discuss expectations and work schedules.
Days 2-6
Now that you’re accustomed to the local area, the work can begin.
In the mornings, you will meet the local coaches and PE teachers in the morning to get to know each other, assess the needs of the team and individuals, and make an action plan. Then, as schools finish for the day, you meet with the football players that your team will be coaching. Eager to show off their skills, you quickly see the talent you’re working with.
Despite the heat, the young players are bursting with energy. You will aim to teach them that while talent and energy are important, they also need to become disciplined players and dedicated team members. Teach them what it means to work together as a cohesive unit, encouraging team bonding activities and some healthy competition!
As the week progresses, you'll spend time analysing players' performance, tweaking your training plan accordingly and deciding areas of focus for the next sessions.
Days 7-8
Saturday - Cape Coast
Ghana, and West Africa more widely, has a tragic past of colonialism and slavery. Many relics of this past remain today giving you the chance to explore the country's dark but important history.
Starting early, you’ll begin your journey to Cape Coast, a beautiful coastal city. It will take just over four hours to arrive!
When you get there, you’ll be able to visit the nearby castle and its museum. You will also learn about the city’s fishing industry and relax on its stunning beaches.
Sunday - Kakum National Park
On Sunday, you will delve deep into the wilder side of Ghana with a trip to the dense rainforest of Kakum National Park.
The highlight of this visit is walking through the treetops on a canopy walk. Learn all about the flourishing flora and fauna that exists in Ghana while you spot birds and simply enjoy the peace of being immersed in this beautiful natural environment.
Days 9-13
After a fun weekend, it’s back to sports coaching. If you want to go over the training plan for the week, then you can head back to the Projects Abroad office. Monday afternoon is once again spent running football training sessions.
On Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings, it’s time to contribute more widely to the community. Students and staff work together to complete basic renovation tasks for the school or community centre based on the needs at the time of travel. In the afternoons, students continue to coach the football team, while staff members have further opportunities to run workshops for teachers.
On Friday, have one last training session before saying goodbye to the group.
Day 14
Wake up on Saturday with a sense of pride. You’ve left an impression on everyone you’ve worked with. The young players have renewed confidence and have benefitted from your coaching.
Local teachers have learned from your workshops and will use this knowledge to further help the development of their students.
It’s time to board the flight back to the UK with a sense of accomplishment and memories to last a lifetime.
We hope you had an amazing experience and can’t wait to welcome you back soon!

Who are Projects Abroad?
Projects Abroad arranges overseas service and internship programmes that are challenging, meaningful, educational and safe.
We have been taking students overseas since 1992 and work in over 20 developing and emerging countries across Africa, Asia and Latin America.
Key to our work is the dedicated in-country staff whose diverse skill sets, local knowledge and love of their community allow us to develop relevant, immersive and worthwhile schedules for school trips which give the students responsibility and teach them to see the world through a different lens.
We offer programmes in community development, conservation, construction, education, sports, empowerment, human rights and healthcare among many others. These projects are designed to contribute towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, broadening the student experience to see the contribution of a few going towards a movement for global change.
All school trips are individualised. We realise that each school has its own goals and interests, and the students have their own passions. We work with the school to develop a tailored itinerary that reflects their values and allows the students to make a connection with the community in which they serve.
