We are once again be bringing our workshops into schools up and down the country!
We are of course very aware that even with schools open things will not be back to normal. We have therefore adjusted our workshops with new safety measures in place while restrictions apply. For a full statement on our Covid-19 Safe Working Practices, click here. A copy will also be sent out with our other information if you make an enquiry.
We also now offer virtual workshops which are live-streamed directly to you and your children both in the classroom and learning at home. It’s easy to access through Zoom and your children will still have the opportunity to speak to a “real” character from history.
Our workshops are run by professional costumed specialists with years of experience in school settings. We don't "stand at the front and talk", we expect the children (and teachers!) to get involved and really feel what it was like to live in the Roman Empire.
Our Roman workshops cover the period from the first attempted invasion of Britain in 55BC to the end of Roman Britain in 410AD. From the first battles between the Romans and the Iron Age Britons (Celts) to the integration into the Empire and to the collapse of Rome and the so-called Dark Ages, the children will learn about the story from both sides. From Julius Caesar to Boudicca, from baths and amphitheatres to citizenship and Saxon invasions, our Roman and Celt workshops bring the whole Roman era to life.
We bring authentically made replica artefacts into school and our costumed workshop leaders will give you a day full of fun activities and hands-on experiences.
Our workshops are designed to give a good overall view of the Romans and Celts, inspiring children with practical activities and hands-on exploration. We can give you a great starting point, a boost in the middle of the topic or a fantastic end and round up of the period.
These workshops can be run individually, specialising in a particular age, or as a combined look at the Roman invasion and the Ancient Britons who were ruled by them.
Topics covered could include:
Meet a Roman legionary and a Celtic Queen
Investigate weapons and armour, and take part in a battle
Daily life and how you might live as a Celt or Roman
Hands-on sessions with authentic replica artefacts
Mosaics and art
Engineering: Aqueducts, running water and under-floor heating
Gods and mythology
Towns and cities, place names and roads
Latin: Language and the alphabet
Invasion, conquest and settlement
Dress like a Roman or Briton
Archaeology and history – what’s the evidence?
Roman architecture: Public baths and communal toilets!
Citizenship and the Empire
The Roman and Celtic legacy: what’s left?
We can also include any specific topic focus or questions that you are working on, just let us know!
