Tintagel Castle has been, and still is, an inspiring place for writers and artists, and there have been many key representations of Tintagel in classical literature. In 1860 Alfred Lord Tennyson, the famous poet laureate, visited Tintagel and it appeared as one of the settings for his poems about the Arthurian legend, Idylls of the King (1859–85). In 1923, Thomas Hardy set his play The Famous Tragedy of the Queen of Cornwall, the story of Iseult, at Tintagel. Use our Teacher's Kit and inspiration trail to explore this with your group.Curriculum topics available: Arts and Culture.
Between the 5th and 7th centuries, while the Anglo-Saxons created their kingdoms in south-east England, archaeological investigations have uncovered evidence of pottery, glass and building remains from this time that show that Tintagel was a large settlement with trade links to the Mediterranean. Find out more about Tintagel's role in European trade at this spectacular site and with the help of our Teachers' Kit.Curriculum topics available: Medieval Society and Feudalism.
Standing half on the mainland and half on a jagged headland projecting into the Atlantic, Tintagel Castle is one of the most spectacular historic sites in Britain. Its association with King Arthur also makes it one of the most famous, although the history of the site stretches back centuries before those first tales. The remains visible at Tintagel today belong to a 13th-century castle built for the hugely rich and ambitious Richard, Earl of Cornwall, brother of King Henry III. Use our Teachers' Kit to discover life in early medieval settlements, medieval castles and the dramatic inspiration for the Arthurian legend. Our facilities have been designed to be as accessible as possible in order to meet the different needs of our visitors.
