What activities are available during this school workshop?
Navigate Hyde Park
Bring Hyde Park into your classroom with a Virtual Orienteering challenge around Hyde Park. Students will learn to use a compass, map and key. They will then compete against each other in a challenge to navigate one of our team members around Hyde Park in real time. Earn points by adding the landmarks we pass onto maps and directing a member of the learning team using bearings and scales.
Suitable for: KS2 Duration: 90 minutes
Virtual Fieldwork – Carbon storage in Hyde Park (one hour live session)
Conduct live virtual fieldwork considering the impact of Hyde Park on atmospheric carbon dioxide through estimating the trees’ carbon sequestration. Students will write and test their own hypothesis, learn a technique for measuring the amount of carbon stored in a tree, and use their findings to propose a new Hyde Park tree management plan. We’ll provide worksheets, methods, unmanipulated data suitable for the NEA, and comprehensive guides through statistical analysis alongside expert advice from The Royal Parks' learning and arboriculture teams.
Suitable for: Post-16 Duration: 60 minutes
Virtual Fieldwork - Ecology
Conduct virtual ecology fieldwork on biodiversity in freshwater habitats with The Royal Parks’ Learning Team.
In the first session, suitable for KS4 and KS5, students will be forming their own hypotheses, considering biotic and abiotic factors, identifying freshwater invertebrates, completing scientific drawings, then analysing their data and drawing conclusions. After hearing from people managing the park, students will be using their findings to advise The Royal Parks on how we ought to manage The Serpentine lake in Hyde Park for biodiversity.
The second session is a KS5 data analysis masterclass. Students will see first-hand how research can be put into action. They’ll be studying and manipulating the same data that we commissioned and used to form our actual management plans. Students will learn about the factors at play when managing a large urban waterbody, the techniques we have employed to combat eutrophication in the Serpentine and will analyse photographs to measure the effect of planting reed beds on the water’s oxygen concentration. Using secondary data, graphs and statistical analysis, students will assess the success of our measures against Eutrophication.
Suitable for KS5

How does safeguarding work for online workshops?
Our Learning Officers will be guiding your class through a Virtual Fieldwork Experience in your classroom from Hyde Park. When you make a booking, you will receive an email with further information about the session you have booked and a Microsoft Teams link to access the session. You will also receive a physical resource pack which will be posted to your school in advance of the session.
All our Virtual sessions have optional follow-up activities which can either be used following lesson time or set as homework.
What technology/devices/type of internet connection do schools need for an online workshop?
Our Virtual Fieldwork sessions are designed to be projected onto a screen at the front of the classroom and they work best when we are also able to see the class. Therefore the ideal set-up in advance of the session would be for a laptop camera to be facing the class and projecting our Virtual Fieldwork onto a screen at the front of the class. This set-up would enable us to see the class, meaning we can interact with the students and ask/answer questions as if we were standing at the front of the classroom. Alternatively, the teacher can act as a go between from their class to the Learning Officer, selecting students to answer questions and relaying their answers or any questions to the learning officer either through video or the chat box.
Visitors with Special Educational Needs (SEN)
Our experienced education team are more than happy to discuss your requirements and tailor the session to your individual group.
Anything else?
We're able to offer a limited number of bursaries for schools who would otherwise be unable to get to Hyde Park due to cost and/or logistics, by providing free or discounted sessions.
