What activities are available during group visits?
Teaching more than just a sport!
It’s been long known that sports help to develop character in children and young people. Sports are challenging and exciting activities that put people in situations where they need to solve problems, as a result developing skills which can be easily transferred to everyday life .
The Royal Yachting Association (national governing body for sailing and windsurfing) has recently done a lot of research into the character building attributes that children and young people can build on through sport.
1. Teamwork
- Can communicate well with others
- Capacity to see the world from someone else’s perspective
2. Determination
- Sticks with challenging situations
- Bounces back after set-backs
3. Communication
- Able to listen carefully and offer an opinion
- Can match language to audience
4. Independence

6. Creativity

This gives just an idea of how valuable sports can be; pairing the above with our curriculum linked sessions below, we believe will help make your children and young people more successful in their academic studies as well as more rounded individuals.
We can supplement the class room lessons your students will be receiving by getting them outside the classroom, or on the water and experiencing a lot of what they are learning about in class. Please see below for an idea of some of the topics we can assist with during our sessions and an example session plan.
Key Stage 2 – Science:
- Recognising that some mechanisms, including leavers, pulleys and gears allow a smaller force to have a greater effect
- Identifying the effects of air resistance, water resistance and friction that act between moving surfaces
- Pupils observe and talk about changes in weather and seasons
Key Stage 3 – Science:
- Forces as pushes or pulls, arising from the interaction between objects
- Simple machines give bigger force at the expense of smaller movement
- Waves on water as undulations which travel through water with transverse motion
- Balanced and unbalanced forces – opposing forces and equilibrium
- Food as fuel - calculations of energy requirements in a healthy daily diet.
Key Stage 2 – Physical Education:
- Water Safety
- Compare performances with previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best
- Take part in outdoor and adventurous activity challenges both individually and within a team
Key Stage 2 – Maths:
- Describing position, direction and movement. Including whole, half, quarter and three-quarter turns
- Identify right angles, recognise that two right angles make a half-turn, three make three quarters of a turn and four a complete turn. Identifying whether angles are greater than or less than a right angle
- Identifying: Angles at a point and one whole turn (360). Angles at a point on a straight line and half a turn (180). Other multiples of 90
Key Stage 3 – Design and Technology:
- Pupils learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens
- Understand and use the properties of materials and the performance of structural elements to achieve functioning solutions
Key Stage 2 – English:
- Select and use appropriate registers for effective communication
- Give well-structured descriptions, explanations and narratives for different purposes
- Use spoken language to develop understanding through speculating, hypothesising, imagining and exploring ideas
