Nomadic School Tours has recently added another short haul destination which is ideal for students to learn outside the classroom - POLAND.

History

Poland is an obvious choice for teachers when studying World War 2. Tours of Auschwitz and Birkenau are an excellent way to bring the rich and devastating history of this incredible country to light. Let’s not forget Treblinka and Lublin, two more towns which were also deeply scarred by the war. You could also include Belzec and Majdanek, two communities which are often forgotten but harbored some of the more calamitous acts performed by the Nazis.

Culture

Learning about the dark side of WWII can be overwhelming for a teenager, so we want to make sure they get a break and see the beautiful side of Poland. Warsaw is known for its Old Town, the heart of the city and a UNESCO World Heritage Listed area. Historical buildings blend seamlessly with modern architecture. Views of the city from across the Vistula River are not to be missed. The Warsaw Rising Museum gives visitors an interactive inside look to the moment that changed the face of Warsaw forever. The itinerary should also include The POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews, which received the prestigious title of European Museum of the Year 2016. It outlines the 1000 year old Jewish presence in Warsaw and is a beautiful example of contemporary architecture.

Krakow, also located on the Vistula River, is filled with historic buildings, from medieval churches to ancient monuments. There are 36 museums in Krakow ranging from Aviation to Medieval Art and Archeology. There are two specific districts within Krakow that should always be on the schedule, Old Town and the Kazimierz District. Old Town is a hodgepodge of cobbled lanes and alleys, wide streets with historic merchant houses lining the pavements, and sprawling squares where medieval churches and trading houses stand out over the flagstones. Once the historic Jewish Quarter of Krakow, Kazimierz can be found lying just to the south of the UNESCO-tagged Old Town. A place of crumbling plaster and exposed brick, merging the industrial and the Gothic, with both synagogues and artisan beer houses, it’s the verve centre of local life.

Location

Most of the places Nomadic School Tours can take you are quite a distance to fly. Poland, however, is just on the UK’s doorstep - only about a 2-hour flight. By being so close, it would be possible for a class to spend a long weekend on a four-day tour mid-year which would be very affordable. Speaking of savings, Poland, although a member of the EU, has its own currency and is very affordable for travellers, especially those schools on a tight budget. There are many flight options and accommodation choices, so there is a good chance a trip to Poland will gain the approval that other destinations may not.
