The View from the Peak

First things first, tell us a bit about Mount Cook. What is it?
Great question! Mount Cook Adventure Centre is an independent, not-for-profit outdoor education centre based on the edge of the Peak District.

Mount Cook was founded by outdoor enthusiasts Robin Sibson and Colin Adams, who wanted to give something back by enabling others to enjoy the great outdoors through adventurous activities and outdoor learning in Derbyshire. The purpose-built outdoor adventure centre took just 1 year to build and opened its doors to the public in July 2016, and since then has welcomed over 60,000 individuals through its doors.

What kind of activities can our pupils look forward to?

Oh, where to begin! Activities on offer include a 40-foot-high ropes tower, archery tag, bushcraft, a 100-metre zip wire, rock climbing, abseiling, orienteering, and more - all run by qualified instructors.

Mount Cook also boasts Derbyshire's longest zip wire which launches from the roof of the centre itself - also known as the Rooftop Rider.

For those wanting a curriculum-based trip, Key Stage 2 History experiences are available with an immersive day with a Roman soldier, Viking, or a prehistoric caveman!

Is it suitable for all abilities and ages?

Mount Cook Adventure Centre has activities for groups who are aged 6 years and upwards, with some being 9+ (but we have no age restrictions on accommodation and catering!). All activities include review sessions to ensure the desired outcomes are achieved for students - whether that's personal challenge or developing teamwork skills. The centre has accessible bedrooms including wheelchair-friendly rooms with hearing loops.

Our trips are suitable for both Primary and Secondary schools, with a variety of day trip options, or residentials of two or four nights.

What about accommodation? Will the children be comfortable?

The modern, eco-friendly main building accommodates up to 140 guests across 35 ensuite bedrooms and features a large, glass-fronted dining hall. A variety of flexible meeting spaces are fully equipped with projectors and screens to support classroom sessions and workshops. Parents will be pleased to hear that the small ensuite dorms sleep no more than 6 people, making a good night's sleep more likely. Duvets, pillows and linen are all provided, so no need to pack a sleeping bag!

And for something a little different, ten distinctive glamping-style pods each sleep four in bunk beds and include lighting, USB charging points, heating, and private WCs.

On the food front, one visiting school left this review: "Our school canteen food quality is really poor compared to the quality offerings that Mount Cook provide. So much choice for the kids and even the fussy eaters are happy."

What's the local area like? Is there more to explore beyond the centre itself?

The location is fantastic. Mount Cook overlooks our on-site quarry and is a 5-minute walk from Black Rocks. The surrounding countryside includes woodlands, historical trails, quarries, caves, and reservoirs.

Local highlights include Chatsworth House, with its beautiful gardens and seasonal attractions, as well as Cromford Mills, the Heights of Abraham, and The National Stone Centre - all within a ten-minute drive from the centre.

Finally, why should your school choose Mount Cook?

Through engaging activities, pupils will develop important skills including leadership, teamwork, decision-making, and problem-solving. These experiences broaden horizons, expand appetite for learning, increase attainment, and equip students with valuable social skills that will last a lifetime.

As one teacher put it: "Beautiful location, facilities and supportive, knowledgeable staff."
