Outdoor residentials support children's mental health

Children's mental health is an important topic, one that is growing in leaps over the last few years. We've seen more schools and groups supporting their young children by teaching the basics of self-care and confidence, while charities like Mind and Young Minds have provided endless resources to growing positive mental health for the youth.
However, positive mental health practices don't have to come from the classroom. A residential experience, whether day or overnight, allows children the opportunity to build a toolkit of positive mental health skills.
What are the benefits of a residential?
Gives children the space to try new things
A residential, or outdoor adventure, can give children the chance to try something different. For some, this may be one of the few times they spend in nature, allowing them to explore, learn new things and try different activities is invaluable. By practising their communication in team-based activities like rafting or learning how to navigate through nature in an obstacle course, young people can grow in confidence.

Welcomes mistakes
Getting things wrong is tough, especially in a classroom setting. But learning to work through mistakes and bounce back is an invaluable skill. Children learn about resilience and determination through activities when on a residential. Giving them space to work together to support each other too. Resilience is one of the key skills we model through our programmes, offering adrenaline-filled activities that build on developing resilience.
Enjoy the outside
Nature is unique, it provides wonder and awe whilst also being educational. Having the chance to run around, play in the lake or even do curriculum-based learning within nature, allows children the chance to be carefree. A residential has focused time for young people to enjoy and explore being outside.

A sense of independence
Independence allows children to learn their boundaries, to communicate their needs and to develop maturity. Overnight residentials are great to foster this sense of independence while ensuring children are safe and cared for. This is also a great opportunity to link classroom learning into active practice.
Solidify life skills
Whether it's building confidence, boosting self-esteem, developing resilience or communicating with their peers; residential experiences allow children to solidify their life skills while making memories that will last a lifetime.
