Example Itineraries for our 2026 trips

Typically a 5 day tour, the itinerary can be extended to include additional visits to Pico and/or Horta, with direct flights available for convenience. This allows your group to study the region's diverse geological features, volcanic activity, and unique landscapes.

Day 1: Depart from your school and fly to Sao Miguel, the largest island of the Azores, via Lisbon. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel and settle in for the night. This initial day provides an opportunity to rest after your journey and prepare for the upcoming explorations.

Day 2: Set off on a full day guided walking tour of the Furnas Valley, a region known for its volcanic activity and lush landscapes. Visit the Furnas Volcanic Centre to learn about the island's geological history and volcanic phenomena. Walk around the Caldera lake, formed within a volcanic crater, and take a look at the hot springs and fumaroles that have ongoing geothermal activity. The tour also includes a visit to the famous Botanical Gardens, showcasing native and exotic plant species, and a visit to a local tea plantation, where students can learn about the island's agricultural practices and the importance of geothermal energy. Return to the hotel for dinner and an evening of relaxation.

Day 3: Spend the day exploring Lago do Fogo (Lake of Fire), a stunning caldera lake formed within a volcanic crater. The day includes a visit to Caldeira Velha, a natural hot spring with warm waterfalls perfect for observing geothermal energy in action. Continue to the geothermal power plant to understand how volcanic activity supplies sustainable energy to the region. Later, you can relax at the hot springs of Ribeira Grande, where students can observe the geothermal features firsthand. In the evening, enjoy dinner in the nearby town of Ribeira Grande, followed by a stargazing session at the renowned Astronomy Centre.

Day 4: Take a guided tour to Sete Cidades, a volcanic caldera with twin lakes, and explore the surrounding lava tubes. The walk around the Sete Cidades lakes offers the chance to see volcanic crater formation and erosion processes. Later, visit Ponta Delgada, the island's vibrant capital, to learn about urban adaptation to volcanic landscapes. Complete the day with a visit to the Gruta do Corvo lava tubes, these fascinating underground formations are created by flowing lava. Return to the hotel for dinner.

Day 5: After breakfast transfer to the airport for your flight back to Lisbon, where you will connect to your journey home.
