Why should you consider Building in Nepal with Projects Abroad for
your next School Trip or Educational Visit?
Projects Abroad arrange overseas service and internship programmes which are challenging, meaningful, educational and safe.
We have been taking students overseas since 1992 and work in over 20 developing and emerging countries across Africa, Asia and Latin America.
Key to our work is the dedicated in-country staff whose diverse skill sets, local knowledge and love of their community allow us to develop relevant, immersive and worthwhile schedules for school trips which give the students responsibility and teach them to see the world through a different lens.
We offer programmes in community development, conservation, construction, education, sports, empowerment, human rights and healthcare among many others. These projects are designed to contribute towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, broadening the student experience to see the contribution of a few going towards a movement for global change.
All school trips are individualised, and we realise that each school has its own goals and interests, the students their own passions. We work with the school to develop a tailored itinerary which reflects their values and allows the students to make a connection with the community in which they serve.

Example Itineraries
Days 1 & 2
Arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, Kathmandu where the group will be met by members of the Projects Abroad team and taken back to the hotel in the Thamel district of the city.
After settling in, the local team will lead a thorough induction on the project aims, expectations, safety and Nepali culture.
They will lead the group on a walk around Thamel, familiarising everyone with their local area and what day-to-day life looks like in the hectic city. The group will also visit the building site and discuss plans, also stopping to look at completed examples of classrooms. Finally, the group will make sure it is ready for starting work the following day.
Days 3 – 6
Building days – the group will split into teams working on different tasks under the supervision of local builders and Projects Abroad staff. Working towards constructing classrooms for the local children, the students will learn to prepare building materials, build walls, install roofing, and much more!
Students will have a turn at all tasks and usually progress is made very quickly, building enthusiasm and pride within the group.
There will also be opportunities to interact with the children at the school and we schedule activity sessions where the group may arrange games or sports or support the children in English lessons which will often become Nepali lessons for the group at the same time.
Throughout the week, Projects Abroad will organise late afternoon and evening activities for the group such as dancing and cooking lessons, henna painting, quizzes, visits to temples and staff-led shopping expeditions.
Days 7 – 9
Pokhara is a stunning hill town with incredible views towards the Annapurna Ranges of the Himalayas.
The group will travel by bus to Pokhara, stopping for snacks and sightseeing along the way.
It is a five-hour drive and on arrival, the group will check in at their hotel and, once refreshed, start on an orientation around the town.
The group may do activities on the famous Phewa Lake, watch the sunset over the mountains and watch a show.
The following day will be busy with visits to caves and temples and Sarangkot, above the town of Pokhara with amazing views back down to the lake and town and across to some of the highest peaks in the Himalayas.
After a relaxing couple of days embracing the spectacular mountain scenery, the group will drive back to Kathmandu and spend the afternoon resting or shopping and getting ready for the resumption of building the following day.
Days 10 – 13
Progressing the building work, hopefully being able to complete the build within the stay. The second week will see the students able to start decorating the interior of the classrooms as well as completing the structure (roofing done by local builders).
There will be more engagement with the local children and more evening activities as the group is feeling at home in Kathmandu.
Dinner will be taken at a variety of restaurants allowing the group to sample a range of Nepali cuisine as well as the Nepali version of some more familiar dishes which is always interesting.
On day 13 there will be a farewell party at the school, hopefully being able to hand over a largely completed classroom. After leaving the school the group will have a last dinner in the city and a debriefing session and discussion on their stay.
Day 14
Last-minute shopping if there is time before the local team take the group back to Tribhuvan airport in time for departure after a job well done.

Who are Projects Abroad?
Projects Abroad has been working in Nepal for over 20 years, employing many local staff and, through the efforts of these staff members and student volunteers, achieved much in community development projects, health and education.
One of the biggest challenges came in 2015 when two massive earthquakes hit Nepal which caused huge loss of life and devastating effects on buildings and infrastructure.
Our Building in Nepal Project was initiated almost immediately to provide new and improved classroom facilities for the many schools in Kathmandu whose older and more precarious buildings had been lost.
Projects Abroad worked with engineers and architects to come up with simple designs for classrooms which are more earthquake-proof and can be built quickly, to a simple design, using plentiful materials.
Students will work alongside professional builders in constructing a classroom; digging foundations, building the walls and fitting and decorating the interior. They will learn many practical skills and, working hard as a team, have the satisfaction of making a meaningful contribution to the school.
The students will also engage with the local children, arranging and leading activities while soaking up the Nepali way of life and learning some language from the children.
The project runs in different suburbs of Kathmandu, there is a long list of schools requesting new and better learning spaces. Students will have the privilege of working in the pales that visitors usually never see, observing and learning about an authentic Nepali way of life.
They will stay in a hotel in the bustling centre of Kathmandu, travelling by minibus to work each day while using the hotel as a base for visiting the temples, shopping streets or just watching life go by in the charismatic and ever-fascinating capital city of this charming and awe-inspiring country.
