The Roman Amphitheatre at Chester was initially constructed in the 1st century, before the Legion were moved up to Hadrian's Wall and the Amphitheatre fell into ruin.

What activities are available during educational visits?

The great Roman Amphitheatre at Chester is very accessible and just one of a number of Roman ruins that can be viewed on a school trip to Chester. Your pupils can see the various Roman artifacts up close and find out more about how the Roman people lived in the settlement known as Deva Victrix.

Romanisation and ways of life Roman Buildings

Take a Roman school trip to the amphitheatre at Chester - the largest in Britain. Used for entertainment and military training, there have been two stone-built amphitheatres on the site.

The first included access to the upper tiers of seats via stairs on the rear wall, as at Pompeii, and had a small shrine next to its north entrance. The second provided seat access via vaulted stairways. The two buildings differed from each other and from all other British amphitheatres, underlining the importance of Roman Chester.

What size groups do we cater for?

There are generally no limits to the size of education group, provided the group meets our ratios for leaders to learners. Our Discovery Visit workshops are suitable for groups of up to 30. Please see our school visit terms and conditions on our website for further details.
