Rivers Day at Bewdley Museum School Trip

location icon Bewdley DY12 2AE

West Midlands Worcestershire

trip icon Our situation on the River Severn makes us ideal for delivering a learning programme linked to the river and its impact on the town. A hands-on activity helps children understand the forming of the river and its course through to the Bristol Channel. The impact of flooding, which has been so widely publicised for this area for many years, forms a large part of our programme. Our schools are taken on a guided river walk, looking at features discussed, including the flood defences, and focusing on the ways in which the river has been used for and by locals over its history. A hands-on water safety session looks at what to do if learners are ever in trouble or see someone in trouble in deep water and we offer the chance for everyone to take part in making a rope in the traditional way, at our very own ropewalk.

What activities are available during educational visits?

Our four-hour session comprises of as many as the following activities as we are able to cover:

* Meet the River Severn - examining the fascinating facts about this record-breaking river.

* River Severn Challenge - from source to mouth, we follow the river as she winds her way through Wales and England. Children work as a team to plot her course and she examine key features and cities en route.

* River Walk - a guided exploration of the features discussed, the flood defences and the history of the river.

* Rope making - a hands-on session where the group learn about the ancient trade of rope-making and assist in making their own rope at our very own ropewalk

* Water Safety - a hands-on session where learners are taught about how to stay safe around water, what to do if they find themselves in danger and how to assist someone in distress. A must for young people living by water.

Which curriculum topics do we cater for?

green tick Environmental Geography School Trip

Flooding Climate change

The impact of climate change and local flooding is a key focus of the River Day programme. We use data to illustrate changes in the frequency of flooding over time. We ask children to consider the reasons of the change in climate and weather and possible human actions which could contribute. When the river is high, flood defences in action can be seen on our River Walk.

Natural resources Economic activity and trade

On our river walk, we explore why Bewdley's position on the river made it a good settlement place. We examine what natural resources where and are available in the Wyre Forest and how this lead to the growth of import and export on the river.

Flooding Rivers

Through hands-on activities, we explore the features of the river from source to mouth, highlighting local waterfalls, meanders and ox-bow lakes. There is currently work on-going in Bewdley on flood defences and, when the river is high, these can be witnessed in action.

What size groups do we cater for?

Our themed Education room is suitable for one class of children, approximately 30, and we feel this offers the best experience. However, it is possible to bring 60 and for us to use a second teaching space, an additional teacher and for groups to rotate round the activities.

On-site classroom facilities?

Our teaching sessions take place in our dedicated spaces, but also make use of key highlights within the museum. A covered lunch space will be provided for visiting groups and we encourage picnics in our gardens when the weather permits.

Is there first aid on site?

We do have trained first aiders and access to first aid equipment on site, but, due to the nature of the programme, we encourage schools to bring their own first aider and equipment.

Access for visitors with disabilities

Our Education room and all of the areas of site which we use for the Rivers Programme are wheelchair accessible.

Visitors with Special Educational Needs (SEN)

Our Education team have a wealth of experience working with learners with Special Education Needs. Please contact us to discuss your requirements.

Anything else?

Our shop is available for children (and adults) to purchase a souvenir of their visit.

We have a café on-site which adults visiting with schools may be able to use.

Free coach parking is available at West Midlands Safari Park, which is a short distance away.
Groups arriving by minibus may be able to have paid for parking in the town.

Who are Bewdley Museum?

Bewdley Museum is set in the heart of the beautiful market town of Bewdley, nestled on the banks on the River Severn on the edge of the Wyre Forest. The museum specialises in the rich local history, including the town's Georgian heritage, varied trades and industries and the stories of its people. Our complex of buildings includes one of the oldest brass foundries in the country; a genuine air raid shelter in its original location; Georgian jail cells and the historic Shambles, which is an iconic feature of the museum.
