Our situation on the River Severn makes us ideal for delivering a learning programme linked to the river and its impact on the town. A hands-on activity helps children understand the forming of the river and its course through to the Bristol Channel. The impact of flooding, which has been so widely publicised for this area for many years, forms a large part of our programme. Our schools are taken on a guided river walk, looking at features discussed, including the flood defences, and focusing on the ways in which the river has been used for and by locals over its history. A hands-on water safety session looks at what to do if learners are ever in trouble or see someone in trouble in deep water and we offer the chance for everyone to take part in making a rope in the traditional way, at our very own ropewalk.

Environmental Geography School TripThe impact of climate change and local flooding is a key focus of the River Day programme. We use data to illustrate changes in the frequency of flooding over time. We ask children to consider the reasons of the change in climate and weather and possible human actions which could contribute. When the river is high, flood defences in action can be seen on our River Walk.
Human Geography School TripOn our river walk, we explore why Bewdley's position on the river made it a good settlement place. We examine what natural resources where and are available in the Wyre Forest and how this lead to the growth of import and export on the river.
Physical Geography School TripThrough hands-on activities, we explore the features of the river from source to mouth, highlighting local waterfalls, meanders and ox-bow lakes. There is currently work on-going in Bewdley on flood defences and, when the river is high, these can be witnessed in action.

Bewdley Museum is set in the heart of the beautiful market town of Bewdley, nestled on the banks on the River Severn on the edge of the Wyre Forest. The museum specialises in the rich local history, including the town's Georgian heritage, varied trades and industries and the stories of its people. Our complex of buildings includes one of the oldest brass foundries in the country; a genuine air raid shelter in its original location; Georgian jail cells and the historic Shambles, which is an iconic feature of the museum.
