These workshops have been specially developed to bring to you a wonderful day of learning for your pupils, using interaction and a wide range of exciting resources.
I offer two different space-themed workshops. For KS1, these usually focus around Neil Armstrong and his journey to the Moon, whilst for KS2, we look more deeply at the planets etc.
These are designed to be an alternative to many space visiting sessions which might offer just a 30-40 minute show, as your pupils will spend the entire day immersed in a wide range of exciting space activities with incredible resources such as real meteorites etc…
I also run a science workshop for KS2 on the topic of sound, where children learn all about sound as a vibration, pitch etc, and use exciting resources to record and understand sound.
What teachers say...
"A wonderful day with many varied activities that really brought the subject to life. The pupils won't stop talking about it..."
“Our best enrichment day, ever!”
“Mike really brought space alive for the children, with a well thought out and appropriate narrative the children could access. Highly recommended!”
"A fantastic day for the children...."
"My Yr 1 children loved it, learning so much about Neil Armstrong and space. Thanks for providing a thrilling learning opportunity that really brought space to life for them. Thanks again, and we'll see you next year!"
Where we travel to

What activities are available during this school workshop?
Key Stage 1 Space Workshops – Neil Armstrong and Exploring Space
Our specially developed workshop for KS1 explores the exciting topics of space, centring around Neil Armstrong, and his journey to the Moon.
During the day pupils will engage in a wide range of exciting learning activities, such constructing a 'living' timeline to understand the space race from the earliest explorations of space, and up to the present day, focussing Neil Armstrong and his Moon landing in Apollo 11. They will also discover the difficulties of handling objects whilst wearing the heavy gloves of a spacesuit, using telescopes to observe the 'moon', and handle real rocks from outer space!
Pupils also have the opportunity to dress up as an astronaut (which makes a great photo opportunity for pictures for parents and school newsletters/class blogs etc), and finish the day with an exciting session that looks at childhood in the space age, through original toys and games with the space theme that was very popular during the space race.
Key Stage 2 Space Workshops - Earth and Space
This full-day workshop is packed with interaction and hands-on activities to create a fantastic space day that not only builds pupils knowledge of space and the solar system, but also wider science knowledge and skills.
There are four key elements to the day:
* Exploring the Planets - pupils will develop their understanding of the solar system by planning their own mission to the planets to find out more about them.
* Travelling into Space - An interactive session which looks at the history and evolution of space travel from the earliest ideas of rockets through to the most recent developments in space travel.
* Meteorites – Meteorites give is many clues about the planets of our solar system. Your pupils will handle and examine real meteorites, and learn where they come from and what they are
* A Space-Age Life - This is a really engaging in fun session with which we usually round off the day. By comparing life between the space race era with today, it explores the development of science and technology over the past 70 years.
Key Stage 2 Science Workshops – The Science of Sound
As with our other school workshops, our Science of Sound workshop is resource rich, providing a wide range of hands-on practical activities that will create a solid understanding of key aspects of sound.
During the workshop we explore the way in which sound is created through vibration, the relationships of loudness and pitch, and even experiment with recording the pupils voices using basic historic technology!...
Which curriculum topics do we cater for?
Physics
Earth and spaceSoundSound waves (KS3/4)
Our space workshop - KS2 Earth and Space - explores the movement of the planets and spacecraft by pupils planning their own mission to the planets, as well as other space topics.
The class is broken down into groups, with each group having one particular planet that they will they will find out about, in order to present back to their class.
Explorers Click to expand
Explorer - Neil Armstrong
Explores the fascinating history of space travel for KS1, using a 'living' timeline to introduce the Space Race to the Moon, as well as the Apollo landings, and the contribution of Neil Armstrong in exploring the Moon..
Pupils will find out about the earliest explorations of space, right up to the Moon landing of Neil Armstrong in Apollo 11, and learn about Armstrong's life. We get the children really involved through props and movement as they experience the rivalry of the space race...
We then bring the story of space travel up to date with the latest space explorers, and also find out about the Moon - it's craters and phases...
A range of engaging learning experiences that involve both cognitive and motor skills.
These can include finding out about the difficulties of handling objects whilst wearing the heavy gloves of a spacesuit, using telescopes to observe the 'moon', and examining some genuine original newspapers from the era of the space race.
Toys
A Space Age Life
Learning with a difference with this exciting element that looks at life, and especially childhood, in the space age, through original toys and games with the space theme that was very popular during the space race. We illustrate both what childhood was like during the era of the space race and also the toys that children would have played with in that era (remember - no computers in those days!...) . Pupils also get a chance to play with some of the toys (many of which are original from the 1960's!).
What size groups do we cater for?
Normally between one and three classes, although larger groups may be possible - contact me.
Access for visitors with disabilities
All needs are reviewed and, wherever possible, adjustments made to allow access to the workshop experiences.
Who are Science Horizons?
As one of the most experienced live science workshop and planetarium presenters in the UK, I have had the great pleasure of developing and delivering science and astronomy shows, talks and workshops for over 30 years. In that time, I have given thousands of science workshops and planetarium shows, sharing my knowledge and love of science and the night sky with children and adults - something that is uniquely rewarding.
I love working with pupils to bring alive the exiting world of science and technology. I am a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society, and have loved science since my early school days. I gained a degree in physics with astronomy, and have been fortunate to travel around the world to observe the beauty of the night skies, and also to see two total solar eclipses (Australia 2002 and Libya 2006).
We are bursting with school trip ideas on places that deliver first class teaching both outside the classroom and as in-school workshops. Feel free to use our tailor-made trip form and we can help you find the perfect experience for your class!
