Why should you consider this Medicine & Healthcare in Nepal with Projects Abroad for
your next School Trip or Educational Visit?
If you're an aspiring medical professional, looking to improve your CV and develop your understanding of medicine, this is the programme for you!
Shadow doctors and nurses as you learn about a variety of fields such as:
> Physiotherapy
> Family planning
> Eye Health
> Cancer treatments
As you spend time shadowing doctors, you'll see the process from diagnoses and treatment to aftercare during morning patient rounds. This is a great time to see real-life situations and problem-solving, taking notes as doctors ask patients carefully considered questions and adjust treatment accordingly.
Outside of shadowing, you will sit in on lectures at a teaching hospital to better your medical knowledge, learn about health problems locally, and find out about diseases you may not encounter back home. You will also gain some practical experience, practising how to administer basic health checks such as taking patients' blood pressure.
Volunteers will also join local medical students to see what it will be like once they start studying. All of these experiences will help you not only become more prepared for a future in medicine but also give you the chance to see if it's the right career for you!

Example Itineraries
Day 1
On arrival day, a Projects Abroad staff member will be waiting to collect your group from Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) in Kathmandu. As you walk through the airport, you will find a Projects Abroad staff member waiting for you. The staff members are easy to spot because they’re by the airport exit holding a sign.
Your group will then be taken by minibus to your accommodation in Kathmandu where you can leave your bags while they explore the local area. Wander through the vibrant and bustling streets of Thamel and take a look at the numerous shops filled with unique souvenirs.
You will then head back to their hotel where you will stay the night before making the journey to Chitwan the following day.
Day 2
It’s time to wave goodbye to Kathmandu and travel almost six hours to Chitwan. On arrival, you will be welcomed with lunch and given a moment to settle into your new home for the rest of your trip.
Later that afternoon, your group will take part in cultural awareness training. This will give your group insight into Nepali culture, customs, and traditions, bettering your understanding of the people you will meet throughout your journey, and helping you to feel more at home.
There will also be orientations to help you feel more at ease while in Nepal. You will be shown the local area and taken to your placement to get to know the facilities, meet placement staff, and discuss expectations and their work schedules.
Days 3-6
The main aim of this program is to allow you to learn from experienced doctors through observation and gain some basic and practical, medical work experience.
You will rotate through various hospitals in the Chitwan District and learn how different departments run.
Most of their learning will be done through shadowing medical professionals and attending workshops, helping them learn skills, such as how to check vital signs, and develop knowledge in:
> Anatomy
> Pathology
> Physiotherapy
> HIV/AIDS
Outside the hospital, you will conduct medical outreach in schools and the local community. For those living in poverty, healthcare isn’t accessible. Through volunteering, you will be providing free basic medical care to people living in disadvantaged communities.
You will also participate in medical awareness sessions in schools, sharing presentations about pressing health issues facing Nepal and educating the children about dental hygiene.
Days 7-8
Saturday
On the weekend, your group will go on an exciting outing to Chitwan National Park. Here, students will be amazed as they visit the elephant centre where they will learn about how the elephants are cared for and find out about their behaviours and habits.
After this, students will sit back and watch the sunset on Chitwan and experience a cultural show before eating dinner and heading to sleep.
Sunday
On Sunday, your group will head back out into Chitwan National Park with a thrilling jeep safari around the park followed by bird watching. You can expect to see a variety of habitats and species during this experience. From rhinos and leopards to crocodiles and sloth bears, there is plenty to spot on this safari!
Days 9-13
In week two, you will continue with the shadowing and outreach work you began in their first week. Through talking to medical professionals and taking part in workshops, your group have bettered their understanding of a range of subjects and has become immersed in the Chitwan community through outreach and social and cultural activities.
It’s been an insightful and rewarding few weeks in Chitwan. As you realise your medical placement is coming to an end, you reflect on what you have learned and the impact you have left on the community. On the final night, the staff put on a farewell barbeque to celebrate your hard work and thank you for your efforts. This is a great way to round off the trip and make some final memories.
Day 14
The final day is always bittersweet. You have had an amazing week of new experiences and have learned so much about medical practice and Nepali culture.
You pack your bags and head to the airport ready for your flight home.
It’s always sad to say goodbye, but you are always welcome back anytime. We can’t wait to see what amazing things you do with the lessons you have learned during this trip. We wish you the best of luck in your future!

Who are Projects Abroad?
Projects Abroad arranges overseas service and internship programmes that are challenging, meaningful, educational and safe.
We have been taking students overseas since 1992 and work in over 20 developing and emerging countries across Africa, Asia and Latin America.
Key to our work is the dedicated in-country staff whose diverse skill sets, local knowledge and love of their community allow us to develop relevant, immersive and worthwhile schedules for school trips which give the students responsibility and teach them to see the world through a different lens.
We offer programmes in community development, conservation, construction, education, sports, empowerment, human rights and healthcare among many others. These projects are designed to contribute towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, broadening the student experience to see the contribution of a few going towards a movement for global change.
All school trips are individualised. We realise that each school has its own goals and interests, and the students have their own passions. We work with the school to develop a tailored itinerary that reflects their values and allows the students to make a connection with the community in which they serve.
