This programme is ideal for aspiring medical students looking to improve their CV and deepen their understanding of medicine.
Students rotate through various hospitals in the Chitwan District. There is a wide scope for them to observe and learn whilst in Nepal. Here are a few of the tasks student's will be involved in:
- Observe the work of professional medical staff as they rotate through several different hospitals
- Attend lectures at a teaching hospital that will help them improve their basic medical skills
- Experience life in Nepal while learning more about the country's history and culture
- Form lifelong friendships with other high school interns with similar interests
As they spend time shadowing doctors, they'll witness the entire process during morning patient rounds, from diagnosis and treatment to aftercare. This is a great time to see real-life situations and problem-solving, taking notes as doctors ask patients carefully considered questions and adjust treatment accordingly.
Volunteers will join local medical students to see what it will be like once they start studying. All of these experiences will help them not only become more prepared for a future in medicine but also give them the chance to see if it's the right career for them!

Example Itineraries for our 2026 & 2027 trips
Day 1
On arrival day, a Projects Abroad staff member will be waiting to collect your group from Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) in Kathmandu.
Your group will then be taken by minibus to your accommodation in Kathmandu, where you can drop off your bags before exploring the local area. Wander through Thamel's vibrant and bustling streets and look at the numerous shops filled with unique souvenirs.
You will then head back to your hotel, where you will stay the night before making the journey to Chitwan the following day.
Day 2
It's time to wave goodbye to Kathmandu and travel almost six hours to Chitwan. On arrival, you will be welcomed with lunch and given a moment to settle into your new home for the rest of your trip.
Later that afternoon, your group will take part in cultural awareness training. This will give your group insight into Nepali culture, customs, and traditions, bettering your understanding of the people you will meet throughout your journey and helping you to feel more at home.
There will also be orientations to help you feel more at ease while in Nepal. You will be shown the local area and taken to your placement to get to know the facilities, meet placement staff, and discuss expectations and work schedules.
Days 3 - 6
The main aim of this programme is to allow you to learn from experienced doctors through observation and gain some basic and practical medical work experience.
You will rotate through various hospitals in the Chitwan District and learn how different departments run.
Most of the learning will be done through shadowing medical professionals and attending workshops, helping your students learn skills, such as how to check vital signs, and develop knowledge in:
- Anatomy
- Pathology
- Physiotherapy
- HIV/AIDS
Outside the hospital, you will conduct medical outreach in schools and the local community. For those living in poverty, healthcare isn't accessible. Through volunteering, you will be providing free basic medical care to people living in disadvantaged communities.
You will also participate in medical awareness sessions in schools, sharing presentations about pressing health issues facing Nepal and educating the children about dental hygiene.
Days 7 - 8
Your group will go on an exciting outing to Chitwan National Park on the weekend. Here, students will be amazed as they visit the elephant centre to learn about how the elephants are cared for and learn about their behaviours and habits.
After this, students will sit back and watch the sunset on Chitwan and experience a cultural show before eating dinner and heading to sleep.
On Sunday, your group will head back out into Chitwan National Park with a thrilling jeep safari around the park, followed by bird watching. You can expect to see a variety of habitats and species during this experience. From rhinos and leopards to crocodiles and sloth bears, there is plenty to spot on this safari!
Days 9 - 13
In week two, you will continue with the shadowing and outreach work you began in week one. Through talking to medical professionals and taking part in workshops, your group now better understands a range of subjects and has become immersed in the Chitwan community through outreach and social and cultural activities.
It's been an insightful and rewarding few weeks in Chitwan. As you realise your medical placement is coming to an end, you reflect on what you have learned and the impact you have had on the community. On the final night, the staff put on a farewell barbeque to celebrate your hard work and thank you for your efforts. This is a great way to round off the trip and make some final memories.
Day 14
You pack your bags and head to the airport, ready for your flight home. It's always sad to say goodbye, but you are always welcome back anytime.

Who are Projects Abroad?
Projects Abroad arrange challenging, meaningful, educational, and safe overseas service and internship programmes.
We have been taking students overseas since 1992 and work in over 20 developing and emerging countries across Europe, Africa, Asia and Latin America.
Key to our work is the dedicated in-country staff whose diverse skill sets, local knowledge and love of their community allow us to develop relevant, immersive and worthwhile schedules for school trips which give the students responsibility and teach them to see the world through a different lens.
We offer programmes in community development, conservation, construction, education, sports, empowerment, human rights, and healthcare, among many others. These projects are designed to contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, broadening the student experience to see the contribution of a few to a movement for global change.
All school trips are individualised. We realise that each school has its own goals and interests, and the students have their own passions. We work with the school to develop a tailored itinerary that reflects their values and allows the students to make a connection with the community in which they serve.
