School group trips to Switzerland allow students an amazing opportunity to experience stunning landscapes, visit famous cities and locations, and enjoy a variety of outdoor activities. The scale of the Swiss Alps is always a surprise with breathtaking mountains and the Jungfraujoch railway station, known as the Top of Europe, which provides panoramic views of snow-capped peaks and glaciers. The charming city of Zurich provides a blend of modern attractions and historical sites, including the Old Town and some luxurious shopping streets. At Lake Lucerne you can enjoy boat trips and lakeside walks, giving students a chance to appreciate Switzerland's natural beauty while engaging in educational excursions about local ecology and history.
Other places to include on your school group trip are the vibrant city of Geneva, home to international organizations like the United Nations making it ideal for learning about global diplomacy. The medieval town of Bern, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offers a glimpse into Switzerland's rich history with its well preserved old town.
With flights from the UK taking less than 2 hours, or a 12 hour coach journey, Switzerland is within reach for lots of UK school groups.
So what makes Switzerland a good destination for schools?
In terms of study options, the standout curriculum subject, and the one for which we see most interest, is Science and in particular, Physics. Geneva, one of Switzerland's principal cities, is the home of CERN, the European centre for nuclear research. When the centre built a particle accelerator, it received a lot of popular press and their public outreach became skilled at engaging students from all over Europe.
Switzerland is a great school trip destination for Modern Foreign Language students. A landlocked country, Swiss people speak languages including German, French, Italian and English. Another cross curricular option is physical geography. Set your students marvelling at the mountains, gazing at the glaciers, or performing some spatial regression modelling on the Baechlisboden Floodplain.
If skiing appeals, check out our dedicated school ski trips page. Switzerland is often overlooked as a school trip destination, yet there are some fantastic resorts with ski areas suitable for beginners, the snow is often more reliable than in the other parts of the Alps, and of course the food is worth a trip alone.
