Polar regions workshops for KS2

Which school trips and workshops teach about polar regions?

Polar trips use simulations and expeditions - covering climate, discovery, and survival.

Embark on an extraordinary expedition inspired by the fearless pioneers of polar exploration with our fun and engaging Polar Regions school workshops. Weaving the tales of renowned explorers creates a captivating experience that align seamlessly with the UK curriculum.

Immersive polar regions workshops for KS2 and primary school children provide an in-depth look at the daring expeditions undertaken by pioneering adventurers who ventured into the unforgiving Arctic and Antarctic regions. Braving treacherous conditions these adventurers sought scientific discoveries and the thrill of being the first to reach the North or South Pole.

Despite knowing that our cold polar regions existed, it was hundreds of years before the great explorers of the early 20th century rose to the challenge and fought extreme temperatures to reach the north and south poles.

Polar Regions and Explorers School Trips - Frequently Asked Questions

9 March 2026

Why choose a polar regions or polar explorer workshop?
Sometimes it feels cold enough to think we know what it is like to live at the poles, but in reality, they are places that are beyond our experience. Taking a workshop is a fantastic way to bring stories of adventure and climate to life, making physical geography really engaging for students. They tie into curriculum topics on extremes and can be quite motivational, inspiring students to think big.

In-school workshops or museum visit?
Workshops are great if you want hands-on experiences or some great story telling - they cost around £150-£400. Museums, on the other hand, are perfect for exploring artifacts and learning in a more relaxed setting, but you may be limited depending on where you are in the country. Only the bigger city museums tend to have exhibits dedicated to the polar regions.

Are there any free options for polar learning?
Absolutely! The Natural History Museum’s galleries are usually free to visit, offering a wealth of polar-related exhibits without any cost.

What are the top 10 polar regions and explorer trips for schools?
Based on teachers’ recommendations for 2026, here’s our current list:

1. Scott Polar Museum in Cambridge (artifacts)
2. In-school explorer workshops
3. Natural History Museum (free polar exhibits)
4. Eden Project’s cold biomes
5. Scottish polar exhibits
6. Welsh explorer sites
7. Local adventure centres focusing on survival skills
8. Dynamic Earth (ice-themed exhibits)
9. RSPB’s polar bird habitats
10. VR polar tours for immersive experiences

How about trips for SEND students?
Museums have great stories to tell, and workshops can be adapted to suit different needs. There are lots of ways we can help make the cold environment topics accessible and engaging for everyone.

What’s the budget for polar trips?
Costs can vary. Free museums and bus travel are usually around £3-£10 per child. Entry to centres is about £5-£15, workshops range from £150-£400, and residential trips typically cost £120-£250 per child. There may also be funding that can help cover costs. If you really want an immersive experience and you can budget more than a day trip, take a look at our Nordic section for visits to places like Svalbard!
