Paige at Jailhouse Tours in our home town of Shrewsbury spoke to us about their popular citizenship school visit.

How long does a tour last?

Our tours can range from 2 to 4 hours depending on how much you want us to cover and tailor for your students.

Who leads the tour?

The Shrewsbury Prison tour is led by an ex-prison officer with a wealth of stories and knowledge. They are able to shine a light on what really happened behind the high prison walls. The Shepton Mallet Prison tour is led by a guide with an encyclopaedia knowledge of prison life.

Which part of the curriculum does your tour fit into?

Students who are focusing on crime and punishment through the curriculum benefit from experiencing what real prison life was like and can relate it to the work they do in the classroom. Many students who are studying psychology, sociology and Victorian history can also walk through our doors.

How many pupils can we bring?

Our tours can cater 8 to 250 plus students. We divide large numbers into smaller groups

Was the prison a real working jail and does it still house inmates?

Shrewsbury Prison was a prison from 1793 to 2013. It has held both men and women and for many years was a place of execution. Shepton Mallet Prison was a prison from 1610 to 2013. It has held both men, women and children and for many years carried out death sentences by HDQ, hanged and by firing squad. In 2013 the ministry of justice closed 7 prisons, including Shepton Mallet Prison and Shrewsbury Prison. Educational tours have been running at Shrewsbury Prison from 2015 and Shepton Mallet Prison from 2017.

How much does it cost

The guided tour is £10 per student and additional activities are £2.00 per student

Do teachers go free?

We have a ratio of 1 teacher to 15 students, we offer 1 free teacher place with this ratio, additional staff cost £5.00 For example bringing a group of 30 students and 5 teaching staff you would qualify with 2 free staff places and an additional cost of £10.00

Will students have time to ask questions?

We encourage students to engage in questions politely through the tour, our experienced staff have lots of knowledge and can answer all questions relating to prison life. You can also book the Q&A experience and have students ask questions in a classroom-based discussion.

What clothes are suitable

We recommend suitable footwear for students as the prison covers a variety of spaces. In the winter months we recommend children wrap up warm as the prisons can get cold

What ages do you cater for?

We cater for all ages, our tours and activities can be modified to suit the age of the students, from primary up to under graduate level?

What can I expect the outcome to be?

Each student will leave the prison with:
· a knowledge of what the prison system is/was like
· the history of the prison that they have visited
· an understanding of crime and punishment through the ages
· an understanding of life under the Victorians

What will my students learn?

We have found that having children out of the classroom and visiting a prison has them highly engaged and motivated. They learn about the history and the harsh penalties and realities comes to real people who have followed a life of crime.

Is it a frightening experience?

Some of the younger students who visit us who haven’t been exposed to this world can find it intimating but our trained staff can modify and adapt to suit all children needs. The aim is to make it engaging and memorable for students.

What do teachers do whilst the students are here?

Teachers are encouraged to engage and support their students through the tour and activities. Many teachers find the tour exciting for themselves as they haven’t experienced a real prison before.

Do you have catering facilities?

In our restaurant we can cater for schools with various priced packages, our Restricted Prisoner Lunch Box covers a sandwich option, crisp and drink, our Basic Prisoner Lunch Box covers a sandwich option, crisps, fruit and a drink and then our Enhanced Prisoner Lunch Box covers a sandwich option, crisps, fruit, chocolate and a drink.
