Take Part in an Awesome Aerospace Residential at RAF Museum Midlands!
RAF Museum CosfordSo Lucy, could you tell us a bit about the STAAR programme?
STAAR is an immersive, fully funded STEM residential camp for Year 9 students! It is delivered in a real-life industry setting, with students staying on base at RAF Cosford. Activities are delivered both on base and at our museum. The programme is centred around engineering and aviation and is designed and delivered by industry experts.
Can you tell us what students get up to on STAAR?
STAAR students will have the exclusive opportunity to experience flight simulators, fly drones and explore the exciting world of engineering in aviation! Throughout the residential there are opportunities to engage with industry professionals from a variety of STEM fields.
Wow, that sounds fantastic! Is it all learning-based?
No, it’s not all work, work, work! In the evenings we hang out together on base, playing sports, watching movies, and generally getting to know each other! I love seeing the individual personalities of our students come out over the residential week " each person has a unique set of interests, and they always find something that they love about STAAR.
Sounds Amazing! When can we go?
So, it all kicks off in July, at the start of the Summer Holidays! It’s a five-day residential camp: students can attend either in the week beginning the 22nd of July or the 29th of July.
Who can take part in STAAR 2024 and how do they apply?
STAAR is aimed at students currently in Year 9/ Scottish S3. Students complete an application form with a supporting adult. There are only 20 spaces available per week, so students need to give the application form their best shot and show us how much they love STEM subjects!
Why is STAAR for Year 9 students only?
STAAR is designed to spark curiosity in aviation! The programme creates confident students, who are excited for and informed about their future career options before they begin their GCSE years. The curriculum is advanced and designed to challenge and inspire students who already demonstrate a keen interest in STEM subjects.
How much does it cost to take part?
Absolutely nothing, it’s free! STAAR is funded by the amazing Northrop Grumman Foundation. We can also help out with travel bursaries for successful applicants!
How soon can we apply?
Applications are open now until 23:59 on the 29th of March. This will give applicants plenty of time to fill in the application form and write their supporting statements, which will be completed both by the student themselves and a teacher, school representative or organisation leader.
You can find all the information and FAQS on our STAAR website page!
