Digitally assisted teaching

On a university trip to Paris, we visited the Palace at Versailles and were given a pair of oversized headphones and a walkman. Don't laugh, it wasn't that long ago. Using a combination of the play and pause button at certain points would provide an audio guide during the tour. Although at the time it would have been seen by my parent's generation as a vast improvement over relying on tiny information boards in the corner of each room, it was far from intelligent, with people clearly out of sync in terms of what they were looking at and what they were listening too. It is a few years since I have been to Versailles, but while I am guessing the black walkmans are long gone, no doubt people are still using technology to aid their learning experience.

Smartphones

Forward to today where smartphones and tablets are now changing the nature of education. These devices have enabled educators and developers to come together to create ever more complex and intelligent solutions for the distribution of knowledge. Most school classrooms have made use of the technology for a number of years and we are starting to see more and more school trip venues include some aspect of digital learning in their products.

Holograms

In a claimed world's first, the City of York in the North of England have embraced the cutting edge of modern technology to create an educational tour that can be completely self guided. Using an app (available on Apple devices for the past year and on Android as of yesterday), the GPS chip built into your phone will navigate you to historically significant spots around the city. Nothing too exciting in that, but once you arrive, the app uses a concept called augmented reality. There are plenty of apps using this technique, but we cannot think of many that exploit the technology as brilliantly as this one. Basically, as you point the camera of your tablet or smartphone at the location described, the app will generate a hologram of a character from history, who will then educate you about that particular part of the city. Once they have completed their talk, you can even take photographs for your classroom wall of your students standing next to the hologram.

The learning potential in digital apps such as this one is staggering. From the ease of access, to the low price point, the barriers for entry are low enough for every school to take advantage. You would be hard pressed to find a school these days that was not in possession of an iPad or tablet equivalent. And with the York Hologram Tour app costing just £1.49, you can bring Roman soldiers, Normans and Victorians to life in front of the eyes of your students.

QR codes

Another example being used today by many school trip venues is the QR or Quick Response code. You have probably seen them, even if you have not realised what they are. Once scanned, these little square bar codes will direct the browser on your device to further information. An example of a school trip venue using QR codes is the National Museum of Scotland, who have labelled lots of their exhibits. Visitors no longer have to rely on a paper leaflet which may give you a paragraph of text about an object, and instead can read to their heart's content.

Brining objects to life

The London Science Museum have created an app called Journeys of Invention which allows visitors to find out more about objects in their collection by putting them in context with video footage and even lets you interact with them digitally. The Apollo 10 moon lander is fantastic example, not only showing it up close but allowing you to climb inside it (virtually) and interact with the control panels. Something that would otherwise get your school banned from the museum for life!

Self guided tours

Self guided school tours have always required the teacher or party leader to have sufficient knowledge about the subject to educate their students. While the teacher is still going to be required to field questions, the apps themselves, whether through audio of words spoken by holographic actors, will cover much of the subject material, providing a professional school trip for the cost of a self guided tour. We confidently predict that interesting and clever use of digital technology for education and storytelling will be of incredible benefit to school trips of the future, whether in the form of holograms or something that we have not even thought of yet.
