For any geographer, Sicily is an absolute dream! Europe's most active Volcanoes - Etna and Stromboli - dominate the landscapes while deep gorges, coastal landscapes and mediterranean flora and fauna will bring the classroom alive for a memorable trip.
At Inspired Travel we aim to offer well-designed and inspiring learning experiences for our groups, be they large or small in number, together with a personal service, professional and flexible style from the first enquiry to their return.
Our itineraries are bespoke and tailored to an individual group; nothing is "off the shelf" although some follow common themes. As such your itinerary is as individual to you as it is to us and we are happy to try to accommodate all requirements.
Sicily, the largest island in the mediterranean has a diverse landscape and heritage, making it an ideal destination for a school trip.
Dominated by Mount Etna, there are numerous opportunities to get up close and personal with a whole range of physical landforms including craters and cones, fissure, lava flows and fumaroles. The gorge of Alcantara is cut through columnar basalt lava flows and coastal geography completes the physical geography emphasis of the tour.
Coastal Management, settlement and tourism are Human Geography elements that can bring the classroom alive.
The itinerary suggested can be adjusted to suit the emphasis of the trip required.
Our most popular itinerary is outlined below and is for a duration of 5 days. It can be adapted in length to suit individual preference.
Day 1 - Fly to Catania. Transfer to the hotel with a visit to Giardini Naxos on route for coastal management and landforms. Alternatively tourism studies are also possible.
Day 2 - Full day to Mount Etna. A visit to the Linguaglosso Visitor's Centre will provide comprehensive background details of the character of the volcano and perfect place to start an Etna adventure. From here your specialist guide will explore the mountain with the group as part of a walk to the summit where the group will encounter craters and lava flows in a lunar style landscape. Return to Taormina en route to hotel to visit the amphitheatre.
Day 3 - Depart from Milazzo for the island of Stomboli with your guide and explore the three craters of their active volcano. Return via the island of Vulcano - the classic stratified cone - and walk to Gran Craters where you can relax in mud puddles. Return to Milazzo and onward to the hotel.
Day 4 - Visit to the Alcantara Gorge which has been cut through columnar basalt of previous Etna lava flows. Walk the 150m gorge and see the impacts of fluvial erosion. Continue with a visit to Piano Provenzana to see lava flows OR to the ancient UNESCO heritage site of Syracuse.
* For a 4 day tour the itinerary would end with the airport transfer after the visit to the gorge*.
Day 5 - Free time in Taormina and the opportunity for a cookery class, Sicilian style, before transferring to the airport for the return flight to the UK
Yes, but would need to be aware of the requirements at the time of enquiry as the itinerary usually includes some walking to mountain summits.
Our accommodation is in 3* hotels within easy access of all visits and excursions. Dinners may be in local restaurants depending upon the season.
