Projects Abroad
Hundreds of thousands of volunteers have travelled with us over the years. Join us with your students on our Childcare and Community Programme in Romania and work in local schools to improve early childhood development.The day-care centres, schools, and kindergartens we work with are often overcrowded and do not have the necessary resources due to underfunding, which leads to teachers struggling to give equal attention to each child.
With your group's assistance, children from disadvantaged backgrounds will receive educational support and develop various skills. Through renovation work, you will also provide the children with a more inspiring learning environment to help them grow and explore!

Example Itineraries for our 2026 trips
Days 1-2
Our local Project Abroad team will collect your group at Otopeni Airport (OTP) before driving you to your accommodation in Brasov.
These first two days will focus on orientation in the city and your placement setting. You will receive a thorough safety and cultural sensitivity induction to learn more about the local customs. Our local team will review the programme plan with you and your students to ensure you know your role and the project's goals.
Days 3-6
During the next four days, you will settle into the placement's setting, observe the classroom staff at work, and engage with the children. As teaching assistants, you and your students will support learning through tasks such as reading to the children, engaging in arts and crafts sessions, and developing educational resources for lessons.
Projects Abroad has checklists for all the development indicators we hope to see from the children as they pass through the centres. Addressing these indicators will provide your students with numerous opportunities to bring their ideas and talents to their day-to-day work.
In the afternoons, you will start on your community work. Your group's project will depend on the school's needs at the time of your trip but could include planting a garden or painting an educational mural to inspire the children.
Social and Cultural Activities
Projects Abroad will plan evening activities to ensure you and your students are fully immersed in Romanian culture, including cooking lessons to learn how to make a traditional dish, quiz nights to test your new knowledge and movie nights.
Days 7-8
On Saturday, your group will climb Tampa Mountain, which overlooks Brașov (from the top, you can see the entire city) and is home to a wide variety of wildlife. Your group can choose whether to hike up or take the cable car.
On Sunday, you will visit Bran Castle (Dracula's Castle), which was built in the 14th century and is now a museum and art gallery open to the public. It is said to be the castle that inspired Bram Stoker's description of Count Dracula's home in the novel.
Days 9-13
Jump back into your placement work. Everyone should feel more confident in their role in the classroom. With the class teacher's support, you will learn more about planning and implementing lessons with the children.
In the afternoons, your group will continue working on its renovation project. As the week draws to a close, you should be able to see the difference you made.
Day 14
After packing your bags, it's time to say goodbye to Romania. Our team will take you back to the airport for your flight back home.

Which Curriculum Subjects do we cater for?
English
During their placement, students will help to develop children's skills and confidence in the English Language. This will help the children as they get older and open more doors in their personal and professional lives. With support from staff, the students will plan and implement activities to help the children to learn the language in a fun and engaging way.
Art
Click to read full text While helping children at the care centres, students will learn to organise and run arts and crafts sessions. As the group teach the children, they are helping them to develop their creativity and fine motor skills.
This will help students to understand the importance of art within early childhood development. The group will also develop a better understanding of how to teach the subject, while also practicing the communication and planning skills used to guide the children.
Volunteers will also get hands-on during their renovation project. In addition to building equipment and flower beds, students may also brighten classrooms with a lick of paint, or paint educational murals for the children.

All group sizes of 5 or more. Free staff place with every 9 students.

Who are Projects Abroad?
Projects Abroad arrange challenging, meaningful, educational, and safe overseas service and internship programmes.
We have been taking students overseas since 1992 and work in over 20 developing and emerging countries across Africa, Asia and Latin America.
