Why should you consider Childcare and Community in Romania with Projects Abroad for
your next School Trip or Educational Visit?
Projects Abroad arranges overseas service and internship programmes which are challenging, meaningful, educational and safe.
We have been taking students overseas since 1992 and work in over 20 developing and emerging countries across Africa, Asia and Latin America.
Key to our work is the dedicated in-country staff whose diverse skill sets, local knowledge and love of their community allow us to develop relevant, immersive and worthwhile schedules for school trips which give the students responsibility and teach them to see the world through a different lens.
We offer programmes in community development, conservation, construction, education, sports, empowerment, human rights and healthcare among many others. These projects are designed to contribute towards United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, broadening the student experience to see the contribution of a few going towards a movement for global change.
All school trips are individualised because we realise that each school has its own goals and interests, and the students have their own passions. We work with the school to develop a tailored itinerary which reflects their values and which allows the students to make a connection with the community in which they serve.

Example Itineraries
Days 1-2
The group arrive at Otopeni Airport (OTP) where they will be greeted by the local Projects Abroad team. They will be taken to their accommodation in Brasov where they can settle in and get used to their new environment.
These first couple of days focus on orientation, in the city and at their placement setting, and discussions around safety and cultural sensitivity. The group will go over the plan for the programme with our local team and ensure everyone is aware of their roles and can make a start on thinking about activities to initiate in the setting.
Days 3-6
During the next four days, students will settle into their placements, observe the classroom staff at work and engage with the children. Acting as Teaching Assistants, the students will support learning through tasks such as reading to the children, taking part in arts and crafts sessions and developing educational resources for lessons.
Projects Abroad has checklists for all the development indicators that we hope to see from the children as they pass through the centres. We also ensure there are resources for the students to use in their activities. In addressing these indicators, we will give the students plenty of opportunities to develop their own ideas and bring their talents into the day-to-day work.
In the afternoons, students will get started on their community work. The group's project will depend on the school's needs at the time but could range from planting a garden to painting an educational mural to inspire the children.
Social and Cultural Activities
In the evenings, Projects Abroad ensures that the fun continues!
Days 7-8
On Saturday, your group will climb Tampa Mountain: the mountain overlooks Brasov (from the top you can see the entire city) and is home to a wide variety of wildlife. Your group can choose whether to hike up or take the cable car.
On Sunday, students visit Bran Castle (Dracula’s Castle): built in the 14th century, the castle is now a museum and art gallery open to the public. It is said to be the castle that inspired Bram Stoker’s description of the home of Count Dracula in the novel.
Days 9-13
Jumping back into their placement school in week two, students are more confident with their role in the classroom. They learn more about planning lessons and implementing them with the children with support from the class teacher. In the afternoons, the group continues to work hard on their renovation project and can see the difference they have made as the week draws to a close.
Day 14
Today, students head back to the airport, ready for their flight back home.
Which Curriculum Subjects do you cater for?
During their placement, students will help to develop children's skills and confidence in the English Language. This will help the children as they get older and open more doors in their personal and professional lives. With support from staff, the students will plan and implement activities to help the children to learn the language in a fun and engaging way.
While helping children at the care centres, students will learn to organise and run arts and crafts sessions. As the group teach the children, they are helping them to develop their creativity and fine motor skills.
This will help students to understand the importance of art within early childhood development. The group will also develop a better understanding of how to teach the subject, while also practicing the communication and planning skills used to guide the children.
Volunteers will also get hands-on during their renovation project. In addition to building equipment and flower beds, students may also brighten classrooms with a lick of paint, or paint educational murals for the children.
What size groups do you cater for?
All group sizes of 5 or more. Free staff place with every 9 students.
Do you offer access for visitors with disabilities?
Disabled facilities can be offered on request.
Do you cater for visitors with Special Educational Needs (SEN)?
Visitors with special educational needs can be catered for on request.

Who are Projects Abroad?
Projects Abroad was founded in 1992 by Dr. Peter Slowe, a geography professor at the University of Chichester. Wanting to explore former Soviet countries after the collapse of the Soviet Union, he founded Projects Abroad. Soon after, volunteers began travelling to Romania to teach and the company has continued to grow ever since.
Hundreds of thousands of volunteers have travelled with us over the years. Join us on our Childcare and Community Programme in Romania and work in local schools to improve early childhood development.
The day-care centres, schools and kindergartens we work with are often overcrowded and don’t have the necessary resources due to underfunding. Consequently, teachers and caregivers often struggle to give attention to each child equally.
With assistance from volunteers, children from disadvantaged backgrounds will be given educational support and develop a variety of skills. Through renovation projects, students will also provide the children with inspiring spaces to learn and play in.
