Due to a lack of funding, many schools in Ghana lack the proper playgrounds, learning materials and sufficient staff. As a result, teachers are unable to give equal attention to their students, which is detrimental to the children's learning and early development.
Our Childcare & Community project in Ghana has three components:
- Education -
Your students will work with the children in small and larger groups, helping to break down local teacher-student ratios, reinforcing learning and adding imagination and energy to the day through organising sports or creative activities. Teach basic English words and phrases through songs, pictures or role play games, play
football games outside, or run arts and crafts lessons to unleash their creativity.
- Greening Initiative -
Take part in our greening initiative, which integrates environmental education, sustainable farming practices, and community engagement, to make a lasting impact on the community.
The tasks you might be assigned include:
- Ecological teaching in the classroom
- Rewilding the school area, including installing two wildlife ponds and planting native hardwood trees, thus increasing local biodiversity.
- Establishing an organic school farm.
- Implementing recycling programmes to reduce the environmental impact of the school and teaching sustainable practices.
- Building tippy taps at the school to help children wash their hands and improve their basic hygiene
- Cultural Immersion -
Immerse yourself in the rich culture of the country. After your volunteer work, delve into the vibrant Ghanaian culture by witnessing traditional dances, engaging in conversations with locals, and indulging in the diverse flavours of traditional cuisine. Explore the country's history and heritage with fellow volunteers by visiting historical landmarks, experiencing the warmth and hospitality of the local communities, and creating unforgettable memories along the way.
Everything you do is aimed at enhancing the children’s learning environment and creating a sense of responsibility for the environment with the community. This work is vital, as the kids will continue to benefit from your efforts long after you’ve completed your project. The tasks you complete will depend on the schools' needs at the time of your trip, but there will always be plenty of things for you to do.

Example Itineraries
Day 1
On arrival day, a Projects Abroad staff member will be waiting to collect your group from Accra Airport (ACC).
Walking through the airport, you will see a Projects Abroad staff member holding a sign by the exit.
You will then be taken by minibus to your accommodation in Akuapem Hills, where you will have time to unpack and rest for a moment.
Once settled in, receive thorough culture awareness training. This will provide you with an insight into Ghanaian culture, customs, and traditions. You’ll then be shown the local area before visiting your placement to familiarise yourselves with the facilities, meet placement staff, and discuss expectations and work schedules.
Days 2 to 6
Working at a local school, you will aim to promote learning and early childhood development through play.
You will do this by taking on activities such as:
> Informal classroom teaching
> Reading books, singing songs, and role-playing to promote language skills
> Encourage creativity through arts and crafts sessions
> Teach the children about good hygiene through handwashing and teeth brushing
> Create teaching materials like posters and flashcards
In the afternoons, your group will also work to improve the children’s learning environment through our greening project, including:
> Ecological teaching in the classroom
> Rewilding the school area, including installing two wildlife ponds and planting native hardwood trees, thus increasing local biodiversity.
> Establishing an organic school farm.
> Implementing recycling programs to reduce the environmental impact of the school and teaching sustainable practices.
Day 7 - 8: Weekend trip
Starting early, you’ll begin your weekend expedition with a four-hour drive to Cape Coast, a beautiful coastal city.
Once there, visit the nearby castle and its museum, learn about the city’s fishing industry and relax on its stunning beaches.
On the following day, delve deep into Ghana's wilder side with a trip to the dense rainforest of Kakum National Park.
The highlight of this visit is walking through the treetops on a canopy walk. Learn all about the flourishing flora and fauna of Ghana while you spot birds and simply enjoy the peace of being immersed in this beautiful natural environment.
Days 9 to 13
In your first week, you took the time to get to know the children at the school, learning more about their individual needs and developing a strong rapport with them. Continue your contribution to their education as the second week begins by planning lessons with the help of the classroom teacher and implementing them as your confidence grows.
Your greening work will also come together, providing students with a better learning environment.
Enjoy a farewell party the day before you leave, where you can celebrate your time in Ghana with the staff and children at your placement school.
Day 14
It’s been an amazing journey for you and your students. You’ve developed a deep connection with Ghana and the local community. The classroom resources and greening initiative you have worked on during this trip will be appreciated for many years.
The children will always remember the time and attention you gave to them. As you leave Ghana, know that you are always welcome back!

Who are Projects Abroad?
Projects Abroad arrange challenging, meaningful, educational, and safe overseas service and internship programmes.
We have been taking students overseas since 1992 and work in over 20 developing and emerging countries across Africa, Asia and Latin America.
Key to our work is the dedicated in-country staff whose diverse skill sets, local knowledge and love of their community allow us to develop relevant, immersive and worthwhile schedules for school trips which give the students responsibility and teach them to see the world through a different lens.
We offer programmes in community development, conservation, construction, education, sports, empowerment, human rights, and healthcare, among many others. These projects are designed to contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, broadening the student experience to see the contribution of a few to a movement for global change.
All school trips are individualised. We realise that each school has its own goals and interests, and students have their own passions. We work with the school to develop a tailored itinerary that reflects their values and allows the students to make a connection with the community in which they serve.
