Why should you consider Childcare & Community in Cambodia with Projects Abroad for
your next School Trip or Educational Visit?
Projects Abroad arranges overseas service and internship programmes which are challenging, meaningful, educational and safe.
We have been taking students overseas since 1992 and work in over 20 developing and emerging countries across Africa, Asia and Latin America.
Key to our work is the dedicated in-country staff whose diverse skill sets, local knowledge and love of their community allow us to develop relevant, immersive and worthwhile schedules for school trips which give the students responsibility and teach them to see the world through a different lens.
We offer programmes in community development, conservation, construction, education, sports, empowerment, human rights and healthcare among many others. These projects are designed to contribute towards United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, broadening the student experience to see the contribution of a few going towards a movement for global change.
All school trips are individualised, we realise that each school has its own goals and interests, the students their own passions. We work with the school to develop a tailored itinerary which reflects their values and which allows the students to make a connection with the community in which they serve.

Example Itineraries
Days 1 and 2
Arrival by plane in Phnom Penh where the group will be greeted by the local Projects Abroad team. They will be taken by bus to their hotel in the city centre where they can settle in, eating and resting as required.
These first couple of days are based on orientation, in the city and at the setting, and discussions around safety and cultural sensitivity. The group will go over the plan for the programme with our local team and ensure everyone is aware of their roles and can make a start on thinking about activities to initiate in the setting.
Days 3 – 6
The key to the first few days is watching and listening to how and what the children learn. It is also important to observe the local teachers and to follow their prompts as the students start to engage with the local children.
Projects Abroad has checklists for all the development indicators that we hope to see from the children as they pass through the centres and will ensure there are resources for the students to use in their activities. In addressing these indicators, we will give the students plenty of opportunity to develop their own ideas and bring their own talents into the day-to-day work.
During this first week the renovation project will get underway with the group split into smaller teams undertaking different tasks, these roles will be rotated so everyone gets to be a part of each process.
Outside of work at the preschool setting, Projects Abroad will arrange numerous activities such as cooking lessons, shopping trips to the market, visits to significant sites from the Khmer Rouge period and walks around the temples and palaces of the city.
Days 7 & 8
Over the weekend the group will take a bus to Siem Reap in the north of the country, home to the huge complex of temples known as Angkor Wat, some parts of which are up to 1,000 years old. Walking through the temples that the rainforest constantly threatens to swallow is a magical experience which is only enhanced by watching the sun rise over their unmistakable silhouettes.
The group will stay in a hotel in Siem Reap and enjoy the shopping and restaurants of this popular town. They can have a swim at the hotel and reflect on their progress so far in between walking through the markets and temples.
Days 9 to 12
Back to the placement and picking up on the activities with the children, focusing on the key development goals with energy and imagination. The confidence and sensitivity that the students demonstrate as the programme goes on, is an example of their personal journey in this wonderful country.
The renovation work will be developing nicely and will be completed by day 13. To keep the energy levels high, we will usually introduce some half days in this second week, taking students to learn about local crafts and possibly to meet secondary school student peers.
Evening activities will continue with a variety of fun and educational themes.
Day 13 is usually a farewell to the setting at which they have worked, a party for the children and the chance for photographs.
Day 14 is for packing, a last-minute souvenir hunt around the markets and for our staff to get the group to the airport armed with many tales to tell their family on their return.

Who are Projects Abroad?
On this programme, students will bring their creativity, energy and enthusiasm to community pre-school settings and roll their sleeves up to help improve the physical surroundings.
Many of the pre-school settings are only open thanks to small charities and the efforts of student groups which, through their efforts and the resources they bring, over time build a thriving and secure environment for younger children to learn.
The alternative is often no pre-school care which means the early years education, socialisation and development can suffer. The efforts of your students go a long way in supporting these settings.
This program is based in the capital city of Phnom Penh, away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre, in the semi-rural and laid back outer suburbs. This allows the students to immerse themselves in a more traditional way of life and appreciate the feel of a village within the big city.
Students will engage with the children in their day to day learning during the mornings. At first, supporting the local teachers, they may work one to one with the students in their activities and gradually, as they get a feel for how everything works, to take mor responsibility for organising their work. This could involve music, dance, sports, crafts, language or numeracy – engaging the children in a range of activities with lower ratios has a big impact on the quality of the day’s work.
The placements tend to be busiest in the mornings so the afternoons are dedicated to a renovation project. This will depend on the needs of the setting but may include cleaning and brightening up a classroom, helping create a playground area or some landscaping or gardening projects.
This element of the program is led by local professionals and is not high risk work but it is physical in a warm climate so the students will work hard and see some rewarding results.
In addition to the work at the pre-school setting, Projects Abroad will organise many cultural and sightseeing activities. Highlights here include language and cooking lessons, an insight and understanding of the genocide of the 1970s, visits to temples, shopping at the markets and a weekend trip to the awe inspiring temple complex of Angkor Wat near the town of Siem Reap.
This is an insightful programme with students learning much about the contrasting historical thread of Cambodia while engaging with a charming and ancient culture and making a tangible contribution to a worthy community setting.
