The great, dense forest, that gives the area its name coats a vast rolling landscape, littered with mountain lakes, medieval towns, picture-book palaces and fairytale castles.
Nestling in this watershed between the Rhine and Danube valleys are isolated communities with cottage industries such as glass blowing, clock making and wood carving.
